  • On-site
  • Full-time
  • Public-works general contractor About Us Brockwell & Carrington Contractors is an established New Jersey public-works general contractor.
We are a lean, subcontract-driven builder — our edge is in the documents, the coverage, and the relationships, not self-perform. Our work runs from roughly $15M to $100M in public construction, with a sweet spot around $30-40M PLA projects. We have invested heavily in a defined, repeatable estimating process and modern tooling, and we are building our estimating team to win more. The Role We are looking for a full-fledged estimator who can run a public bid soup to nuts — from the decision to bid, through subcontractor coverage, pricing, bid day, award, and buyout. This is an ownership seat, not a task-taker seat. You will own the number that goes in, and you will have the process, the tools, and the support of ownership behind you to do it right. The person who thrives here is self-directed, relationship-driven, and competitive — the kind of estimator who works the phones to get real coverage, finds the edge in a set of documents, and wants their fingerprints directly on the wins. What You'll Own ▪ Bid strategy from the start. Review plans, specifications, and addenda; run the go/no-go decision; and set the plan to be competitive on each pursuit. ▪ Subcontractor coverage on the major trades. Own the outreach on MEP, steel, foundation/civil/structure, and envelope — make the calls yourself, build the relationships, and drive real, comparable numbers, not a single quote per trade. ▪ Scope, leveling, and pricing. Build the scope basis, level quotes apples-to-apples, and price the self-perform and general-conditions work that does not come from a subcontractor. ▪ The complete bid package. RFIs and addenda, the proposal and front-end forms, bid bond and listed-subcontractor paperwork, final assembly, and delivery on bid day — with the final number set alongside ownership. ▪ Post-bid and buyout. Recap and debrief each bid, and carry awarded work into a profitable buyout. What You Bring ▪ New Jersey public-works GC estimating experience — required. Five or more years of construction estimating with a general contractor, including real public lump-sum bidding under
NJ Local Public Contracts Law:
listed subcontractors, bid and performance bonds, consent of surety, prevailing wage, DPMC where applicable. This is a public-works role and public GC experience is the core requirement. ▪ The ability to run a bid independently. A verifiable track record of accuracy and profitability, and the self-direction to carry a project end to end without a task list handed to you. ▪ An active subcontractor network. Current relationships across the major trades in New Jersey that you will use to drive coverage from day one. ▪ Full command of the documents. Fluent reading plans, specifications, addenda, and bid forms; working knowledge of structural, civil, and MEP systems, building codes, and construction means and methods; comfortable with CPM scheduling; strong Microsoft Excel. ▪ Clear, confident communication. With subcontractors, owners, and internally — you can negotiate scope and price, and you present a number you stand behind. A plus, but not required: $30M+ PLA public-project experience; some public work in Rockland, Westchester, or Orange County, NY (a market we are entering); and private / commercial contacts to complement your public network. What We Offer ▪ Compensation. $170,000-$185,000 base, commensurate with experience and the strength of your network. ▪ Benefits. Employer-paid medical for the employee (Horizon BCBSNJ), dental and vision, a Simple IRA with employer match up to 3%, company-paid life insurance, paid time off (two weeks of vacation to start), and paid holidays. ▪ The seat. Real ownership of the estimating function, a defined process and modern tooling behind you, and a direct line to ownership — room to be the engine of the department, not a cog in a machine.
