Elderlee, Inc. is a diversified corporation specializing in the manufacturing and construction of highway safety products. Started in 1946, we are a fourth generation privately owned company with facilities servicing the U.S. east coast. Our 200,000+ square foot manufacturing operations are centrally located in upstate New York and consist of steel fabrication, hot dip galvanizing services, and sign manufacturing capabilities for both the highway and commercial markets. We are currently seeking an energetic candidate to fill the role of Chief Estimator.

PURPOSE OF JOB

The Chief Estimator leads Elderlee's estimating department, preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for highway safety construction projects. This role oversees the full bid process, from plan review through contract execution, and partners closely with project managers, engineers, and owners to clarify project scope, manage risk, and support the company's continued growth.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Core Responsibilities Lead the estimating department in preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for construction projects. Review project plans, specifications, and related documents to develop comprehensive estimates. Establish standardized estimating procedures and ensure consistent application across all projects. Analyze historical data and market trends to improve accuracy and efficiency in cost forecasting. Oversee bid preparation and submission, including final pricing and proposal documentation. Evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes to determine the best value and ensure scope alignment. Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and owners to clarify project scope and resolve discrepancies. Develop and maintain a cost database and estimating software (HCSS) for future reference and benchmarking. Review and execute contracts and subcontracts. Serve as D/M/WBE liaison officer, responsible for project goal attainment and authority reporting. Strategic and Leadership Duties Mentor and train junior estimators, fostering professional development and team growth. Participate in strategic planning and provide input on project feasibility and profitability. Assess and mitigate bidding risks, ensuring alignment with company capabilities and market conditions. Support business development efforts by contributing to preconstruction planning. Foster business relationships through attendance at industry conferences. Administrative and Reporting Tasks Prepare detailed cost reports and estimate summary metrics for executive review. Track and report on estimating performance metrics, including win/loss ratios and estimate accuracy. Ensure compliance with legal, safety, and regulatory requirements in all estimating activities. Provide timely contract change orders through agreed prices and cost analysis workups. Maintain a database of industry standards and specifications, including NYSDOT requirements. Manage estimating department personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Associate degree (A.A.) in engineering, math, or business from a two-year college or technical school; or 5+ years of related construction experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Familiarity with NYSDOT standards and specifications. Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, particularly Word and Excel. Strong listening and learning orientation, with the ability to apply new skills quickly and effectively.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Prior estimating experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Primarily an office-based role requiring extended periods of sitting and computer use. Occasional travel to job sites, bid openings, and industry events. Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and related documents.

SALARY RANGE
