Job Description

Position Summary New Age Precision Manufacturing (NAPM) is seeking an experienced Estimator to join our growing aerospace and defense manufacturing organization. The Estimator will be responsible for developing accurate and competitive cost estimates and quotations for complex, high-precision manufactured components and assemblies. This position requires someone who can review customer drawings, specifications, and manufacturing requirements and translate them into accurate material, labor, machine, outside processing, tooling, and overhead costs . The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience estimating work in a precision manufacturing environment , preferably supporting aerospace and defense customers. Experience with CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, forming, welding, dip brazing, chemical processing, finishing, and tight-tolerance components is highly desirable. The successful candidate will work closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Purchasing, and Operations to ensure quotations accurately reflect the manufacturing requirements and the company's ability to produce the work profitably. Key Responsibilities Review customer RFQs, drawings, models, specifications, BOMs, and applicable manufacturing requirements. Analyze complex aerospace and defense components to determine the most appropriate manufacturing processes.
Develop detailed cost estimates for:
Raw materials CNC machining Sheet metal fabrication Laser/punch operations Forming Welding Dip brazing and brazed assemblies Assembly Inspection and testing Outside processing and special processes Tooling, fixtures, and programming Packaging and shipping requirements Direct and indirect labor Machine time and setup time Scrap and material yield Determine appropriate labor and machine-hour rates and apply them consistently to quotations. Evaluate manufacturing routings and determine realistic setup and cycle times. Identify critical dimensions, tight tolerances, GD&T requirements, surface finishes, and other features that may significantly impact manufacturing cost. Review brazed assemblies and determine requirements associated with joint design, filler material, pre-braze machining, fixturing, cleaning, inspection, leak/pressure testing, and post-braze machining. Evaluate whether features and tolerances are practical and cost-effective to manufacture. Identify potential manufacturing risks, special processes, long-lead materials, and other cost drivers before submitting quotations. Obtain and evaluate supplier/subcontractor pricing for outside processing and special processes. Work with Engineering and Manufacturing to develop practical manufacturing approaches for difficult or complex components. Maintain accurate estimating data, including labor rates, machine rates, processing costs, material pricing, and historical job information. Review historical production data and actual job performance to improve future estimates. Compare estimated versus actual costs and identify opportunities to improve estimating accuracy. Support management in establishing appropriate margins and competitive selling prices. Prepare professional and detailed quotations for customers. Maintain quotation records and follow up on outstanding RFQs as required. Communicate effectively with Sales, Engineering, Operations, Purchasing, Quality, and customers when clarification is required. Ensure estimates consider applicable customer, aerospace, defense, quality, traceability, and documentation requirements. Aerospace & Defense Manufacturing Knowledge The ideal candidate should be comfortable working with complex aerospace and defense requirements, including: Tight dimensional tolerances and GD&T Complex machined and fabricated components Aerospace-grade aluminum and other specialty materials Customer drawings and engineering specifications First Article Inspection (FAI) requirements Material and process certifications Special process requirements Inspection and testing requirements Traceability requirements AS9100 quality-system environment Aerospace and defense customer requirements Nadcap-controlled special processes, particularly brazing ITAR-controlled manufacturing environment Dip Brazing Experience
  • Highly Preferred Because dip brazing is a significant part of NAPM's manufacturing capabilities, candidates with experience estimating or manufacturing brazed assemblies will receive strong consideration.
The candidate should understand that the cost of a brazed assembly extends beyond the brazing operation itself and may include: Pre-braze machining Joint preparation Filler metal Cleaning and chemical preparation Fixturing Assembly and loading Dip brazing cycle time Furnace/salt-bath capacity Post-braze machining Leak and pressure testing Dimensional inspection Rework/scrap considerations Customer-specific brazing requirements The ability to recognize these cost drivers when reviewing a drawing or assembly is critical to producing accurate estimates.
Qualifications Required:
3+ years of experience in estimating, quoting, manufacturing engineering, production planning, or a related role within a precision manufacturing environment. Strong ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings. Understanding of GD&T and dimensional tolerancing. Ability to develop manufacturing routings and estimate labor and machine time. Strong understanding of machining and fabrication processes. Strong analytical and mathematical skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications. Excellent attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple RFQs and priorities simultaneously. Strong communication and organizational skills.
Preferred:
Experience in aerospace and/or defense manufacturing. Experience with dip brazing or other aerospace brazing processes . CNC machining estimating experience. Sheet metal fabrication estimating experience. Experience with welding and fabricated assemblies. Experience with special processes and outside suppliers. Familiarity with AS9100 requirements. Familiarity with Nadcap requirements. Experience with ERP/MRP systems such as Epicor. Experience using ERP/MES historical production data for estimating. Technical degree, manufacturing engineering background, or equivalent hands-on manufacturing experience. Skills & Attributes The successful candidate will be: Manufacturing-minded
  • able to determine how a part will actually be produced, not simply calculate a price from a drawing. Detail-oriented
  • able to recognize small drawing details that can have a major impact on cost. Analytical
  • comfortable working with production data, cycle times, labor rates, material costs, and margins. Commercially aware
  • understands the balance between competitive pricing and protecting company profitability. Problem-solving oriented
  • able to identify alternative manufacturing approaches when a quoted process is impractical or too costly. Collaborative
  • comfortable working with Engineering, Production, Quality, Purchasing, and Sales. Accountable
  • takes ownership of quote accuracy and follows estimates through the RFQ process.
