This role focuses on the technical execution of project estimating rather than sales. Key responsibilities include analyzing bid documents, conducting takeoffs, coordinating with vendors and subcontractors, developing proposals with labor and material costs, and ensuring that projected gross profit margins are achieved. Success in this role requires a sharp eye for detail, strong understanding of commercial landscape materials and methods — ultimately supporting GLC's reputation for professionalism in the commercial landscape market. This is a full-time, exempt position with a competitive base salary, plus performance-based bonus and commission opportunities tied to revenue booked and closed projects. Compensation is commensurate with experience and results. The Estimator reports to the Director of Design & Sales Operations and has no direct reports.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Understanding of how client relationships contribute to lead generation and future sales opportunities Exhibit strong written and verbal communication skills, with sound judgment on when and how to effectively relay updates or changes to internal teams, clients, and external partners. Ability to interpret landscape plans, technical drawings, and bid documentation (e.g., RFIs, RFPs) Proven ability to complete large volumes of takeoffs quickly and with precision, even under compressed bid timelines. Skilled in managing multiple projects on tight deadlines, coordinating handoffs, and supporting subcontractor scheduling Strong mathematical and analytical skills with attention to detail Understanding of job costing, budgeting, and financial tracking for commercial landscape construction projects Strong organizational skills to manage evolving scopes, multiple revisions, and fast-moving deadlines Strong sense of accountability and commitment to accuracy Familiarity with commercial landscape construction, estimating, contract processes, and project lifecycle phases in a bid-build setting. Experience with standard takeoff and estimating tools. Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite Valid driver's license with ability to travel locally for job walks, client meetings, and networking Willingness to engage in continued learning and professional developmentPreferred:
Associate degree in Landscape Architecture, Construction Management, or a related field, or equivalent experience in landscape estimating and design Minimum of 3 years' experience in estimating for landscape and hardscape projects (commercial preferred) Working knowledge of Aspire or similar construction/landscape management platforms Familiarity with platforms such as BuildingConnected or Dodge Construction Ohio Certified Nursery Technician or Landscape Industry Certified Technician Bilingual in English and Spanish Licenses and Certifications Valid Ohio driver's license that is not currently suspended or revoked (driving record must meet the insurance carrier's policy requirements and Grunder Landscaping Co. driving standard) Position Duties and Functions Serve as a key point of contact for property managers and commercial clients, gathering clarification, confirming scope details, and ensuring alignment prior to bid submission. Represent Grunder Landscaping Co. in a professional manner that aligns with our core values, mission, and high standards of integrity and accountability. Stay attuned to client needs and project opportunities that may lead to additional work; actively supporting the team by identifying and communicating potential add-on services. Perform precise and efficient takeoffs for multiple landscape projects, including site prep, planting, irrigation, hardscaping, and enhancements—often under tight timelines. Generate a high volume of competitive bids and position each proposal for successful project execution. Develop proposals that reflect desired gross profit margins; provide rationale when deviations are needed based on project conditions. Monitor and manage the status of active and upcoming projects to ensure workflow remains balanced, deadlines are met, and handoffs are smooth across departments. Conduct job site visits to evaluate site conditions, clarify project scope, or support project planning Track and manage multiple bids simultaneously, ensuring accuracy and timely submission. Maintain organized estimate files and documentation to support project transitions and auditability. Communicate proactively with vendors and subcontractors to gather updated pricing and availability details. Manage the proposal process from initial lead to final submission, including scope development, pricing strategy, and formatting. Monitor bid outcomes and incorporate feedback to continuously improve estimating accuracy and effectiveness. Stay current on regional construction trends, pricing changes, and industry best practices. Provide reporting on bid activity, win/loss analysis, and gross profit tracking to the Business Development Manager. Support process improvements for estimating, project setup, and documentation workflows. Maintain an understanding of local codes, construction safety practices, and industry standards relevant to commercial landscape construction. Participate in industry events and client meetings to represent the company and uncover new project leads. Contribute to a team culture that values accountability, growth, and continuous improvement Attend company and client meetings as required. Perform all other duties as assigned. Working Conditions Requires constant contact with candidates, coworkers, and the public. Work is normally performed in air-conditioned/heated facility. Majority of work is performed at a desk. May require visits to outdoor job sites periodically. This is a full-time position, with the majority of work taking place Monday through Friday. However, due to the nature of the role, candidates should expect to often work outside typical office hours. This includes evenings, early mornings, and occasional weekends to attend networking events, client meetings, and other business development opportunities essential to growing and maintaining strong relationships. Flexibility and a willingness to be present where opportunities arise are key to success in this role. Special Equipment Must possess working knowledge of office machines and equipment including, but not limited to: desktop computer and all related software, printers, multi-line phone systems, copier, scanner, and other general office equipment.
