Job Description

RK&R Dozer Service is seeking an Entry-Level Estimator to join our team. This is an opportunity for someone early in their construction career who has gained hands-on exposure through an internship, co-op, or similar construction experience and wants to build a career in heavy civil and earthwork estimating. The ideal candidate is motivated to learn, understands the fundamentals of construction, is comfortable reading plans and specifications, and enjoys working with numbers, details, and people. You'll work alongside experienced team members to learn how RK&R evaluates projects, develops competitive bids, and transitions awarded work from estimating to operations. What You'll Do
  • Review project plans, specifications, bid documents, and scope requirements.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs for heavy civil and earthwork projects.
  • Assist with preparing detailed cost estimates and bid submissions .
  • Help solicit material suppliers and subcontractors for quotes and proposals .
  • Review quotes and proposals for accuracy, completeness, and potential scope gaps .
  • Assist in evaluating labor, equipment, material, subcontractor, and production costs.
  • Learn to identify project and contract risks during the estimating process.
  • Review addenda, clarifications, and changes to bid documents.
  • Maintain communication with Project Managers, Superintendents, suppliers, subcontractors, and other members of the RK&R team.
  • Assist with tracking costs, quantities, and production and use that information to improve future estimates.
  • Help maintain accurate estimating records and our cost-history database .
  • Follow up on submitted proposals and bids to help evaluate competitiveness and bid results.
  • Assist with compiling material supplier and subcontractor information for awarded projects.
  • Participate in estimate handoff meetings with Project Managers and operations personnel, including communicating plans, scope, specifications, supporting documents, bidding logic, and estimating assumptions.
  • Support Project Managers with quantity calculations, clarifications, change-order preparation , and other estimating needs.
  • Develop an understanding of production rates, equipment utilization, construction methods, and appropriate estimating markups.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with customers, engineers, subcontractors, suppliers, and fellow team members. What We're Looking For
  • Entry-level candidate with construction internship, co-op, or similar relevant experience.
  • Interest in building a career in heavy civil and earthwork construction .
  • Basic understanding of dirt-work operations, construction equipment, materials, and methods.
  • Ability to read and understand construction plans, specifications, and blueprints .
  • Strong math and analytical skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Organized, dependable, accountable, and willing to learn.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team player with a diverse group of people .
  • Comfortable working with both field and office personnel.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Valid driver's license. Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Recent graduates and candidates nearing graduation are encouraged to apply.
  • Previous internship or co-op experience with a construction contractor is strongly preferred .
  • Heavy civil, earthwork, grading, excavation, utilities, or DOT-related internship experience is a plus.
  • Exposure to estimating, quantity takeoffs, project management, or field operations during an internship is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with construction estimating or takeoff software is a plus, but we are willing to train the right candidate .
What Will Make You Successful You don't need years of estimating experience to succeed in this role. We are looking for someone with a solid foundation, a willingness to learn, and an interest in understanding how the work actually gets built . Successful candidates will be curious about production, equipment, quantities, and costs; willing to ask questions; comfortable spending time with both field and office teams; and motivated to develop into a well-rounded heavy civil estimator. At RK&R, you'll have the opportunity to learn the estimating process from the ground up and see how the decisions made during estimating affect the job in the field.
Pay:
$65,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
