Based out of Greenfield, Indiana, we've built our name on heavy hauling, mass earthwork, and site development
  • the unglamorous, essential work that has to happen before anything else can get built.
Storm, sanitary, and waterline installation. Cuts, fills, and haul plans that actually pencil out. Demolition, clearing, and erosion control done right the first time. What sets JL Wesley apart is the ground we stand on. We're a growing company backed by a larger, well-capitalized organization whose portfolio includes quick-service restaurant (QSR) construction and light commercial development across the region. That means our estimators aren't just pricing isolated dirt jobs; they're plugged into a steady pipeline of ground-up commercial work, with the stability, resources, and growth path that only come from being part of something bigger. You get the tight-knit, hands-on feel of a small company with the backing, opportunity, and long-term security of an established parent company behind you. About the Role We're looking for a Project Estimator who wants to own the numbers behind our earthwork and underground utility bids. You'll work directly alongside our President, learning the business from the inside: how bids get won, how field realities shape pricing, and how a well-built estimate sets a project up to succeed from day one. We're open to candidates at different experience levels. If you've already got a couple years of civil estimating under your belt, you'll hit the ground running. If you're newer to estimating but have real field or industry experience and the drive to learn, we'll invest in training the right person. What matters most to us is judgment, curiosity, and a willingness to be coached. What You'll Do Estimate civil drawings and full scopes of work, including: mass earthwork (cuts, fills, balancing, haul plans), underground utilities (storm, sanitary, waterline), demolition, site clearing, and erosion control, and site development packages Perform quantity takeoffs and review plans and specs independently Build and manage estimates in tracking software Solicit quotes from subcontractors and material suppliers Develop pricing based on production rates, crews, and equipment Identify risks, gaps, and scope issues before bid day Coordinate with operations to validate approach, assumptions, and crew availability Assist with bid strategy and project handoff Research and prioritize bidding opportunities, consistently meeting bid deadlines What We're Looking For Civil/sitework estimating experience preferred (2+ years is a strong fit, but not a hard requirement for the right candidate) Exposure to Earthworks or similar takeoff software a plus Familiarity with underground utilities and earthwork scopes A working understanding of, or eagerness to learn, production rates, equipment/crew setup, and means and methods Ability to read civil plans, or the aptitude to get there quickly with training Background with a self-performing contractor strongly preferred Above all: sound judgment, reliability, and a genuine interest in the estimating trade What We Expect From You Accuracy over speed
  • a number you can stand behind beats a fast guess Ownership of your numbers
  • you build it, you back it Practical thinking, not theory
  • real-world means and methods over textbook answers Clear, direct communication
  • with clients, subs, and management alike Compensation Based on experience.
