The successful candidate must be able to work independently in fast paced, dynamic environments and be able to multi-task to closely track and manage activities for multiple high-revenue, mission critical bids simultaneously. This role requires the coordination and continued relationship development with GNB's vendors, suppliers, GNB personnel, and GNB's project execution teams to ensure bids, proposals, quotes, etc. are substantially responsive. We are looking for a self-starter with a strong bias for action who is exceptionally curious, willing to learn, and thrives in a fast-paced environment. This role will take on exciting challenges with high organizational visibility that will have an impact on GNB's Mission Critical Manufacturing business.
Responsibilities and Duties Project Analysis:
Review and analyze architectural and structural blueprints, specifications, proposals, and other documentation to prepare time, cost, and labor estimates
Material Take-offs:
Perform detailed and accurate take-offs for structural steel, miscellaneous metals, and hardware
Cost Calculation:
Calculate total project costs including material pricing, fabrication labor (cutting, fitting, welding), coatings (galvanizing, painting), freight, and erection (if applicable).
Vendor Coordination:
Solicit and evaluate pricing from steel mills, service centers, hardware suppliers, and outside processors to ensure the most competitive raw material and buy-out costs
Bid Preparation:
Prepare detailed proposals, bid documents, and cost breakdowns for clients, ensuring all deadlines are met
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Work closely with the engineering, detailing, production, and project management teams to ensure a smooth transition from an awarded bid to active production
Value Engineering:
Identify opportunities for cost savings and alternative fabrication methods without compromising quality or structural integrity
Client Relations:
Communicate with general contractors, architects, and engineers to clarify project scope, address RFIs (Requests for Information), and negotiate final pricing Other duties as assigned Requirements Minimum of 5 years of estimating experience specifically within a structural steel and/or custom steel fabrication environment Structural steel fabrication experience Expert ability to read and interpret complex structural drawings, architectural plans, and fabrication drawings Strong working knowledge of steel grades, shapes, weights, and standard fabrication practices (AISC and AWS standards) Experience with industry-standard estimating and management software (e.g. Bluebeam) and proficiency in Microsoft Excel Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective interaction with vendors, suppliers, and internal teams Experience in the review, understanding, and explanation of architectural/structural drawings and technical specifications Ability to organize and maintain complex data, drawings, requests for information (RFIs) and answers, and miscellaneous information through a bid's lifecycle completion Familiarity with value engineering and how to identify opportunities for such Strong focus on deadlines and detailed strategizing to ensure the meeting of such Strong written and verbal communication skills The ability to travel should the need arise both in Canada and the USA Preferred skills and qualifications Prior experience on the shop floor as a fitter, welder, or fabricator is a significant plus. Familiarity with AutoCAD or 3D modeling software (Tekla Structures, SDS/2) Experience with Lean management and implementation Experience with the drafting of POs and various contract documents like subcontracts Experience with financial modelling and analysis
