An Estimator provides cost estimates for a project, based on an evaluation of the materials, labor, time and equipment needed to complete the project. May specialize in many aspects of construction or in manufacturing and design industries.
Full-Time Position Summary Vortech Contracting is seeking a highly experienced Senior Estimator to join our team in Winnie, Texas. This is a key position within our organization and is intended for an estimator with significant construction experience who can independently manage complex bid opportunities from initial review through final submission. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in industrial, pipeline, mechanical, civil, or related construction and will be capable of reviewing drawings and specifications, developing detailed cost estimates, building project schedules, coordinating subcontractor and vendor pricing, identifying project risks, and producing complete and competitive proposals. We are looking for someone who understands not only how to estimate a project, but also how the work will actually be performed in the field . Key Responsibilities Independently manage estimating opportunities from initial bid invitation through final proposal submission. Review drawings, specifications, scopes of work, bid packages, contracts, and client requirements. Develop detailed estimates for labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, consumables, indirect costs, and project support. Perform detailed quantity takeoffs using Bluebeam Revu . Develop and maintain estimating workbooks, pricing models, bid tabs, and cost analyses using Microsoft Excel . Develop preliminary and bid-level project schedules using Microsoft Project . Establish realistic labor productivity assumptions, crew compositions, equipment requirements, and project durations. Solicit, review, and evaluate vendor and subcontractor quotations. Identify scope gaps, constructability concerns, exclusions, clarifications, assumptions, and potential project risks. Participate in internal bid reviews and provide recommendations regarding pricing strategy, schedule, risk, and execution approach. Prepare complete professional proposals in accordance with client bid requirements. Manage bid submissions through various client procurement, bidding, and contractor management systems. Coordinate closely with Operations, Project Management, Safety, and field leadership during the estimating process. Lead project turnover and estimate handoff following award. Review actual project costs and production results to improve future estimating accuracy. Maintain historical cost information, production rates, subcontractor pricing, and estimating databases. Assist leadership in evaluating bid opportunities and determining which projects align with company capabilities and risk tolerance. Mentor and provide guidance to less experienced estimating or project staff as needed. Required Qualifications Minimum 10 years of construction estimating experience. Demonstrated experience independently preparing and managing complex construction estimates. Strong experience in industrial, pipeline, mechanical, civil, energy, or heavy construction . Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel . Strong proficiency with Bluebeam Revu for quantity takeoffs, measurements, drawing review, and markups. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Project and construction scheduling. Ability to read and interpret complex construction drawings, specifications, P&IDs, bid documents, and scopes of work. Strong understanding of construction labor productivity, crew makeup, equipment utilization, material costs, indirect costs, and project execution. Experience evaluating subcontractor and vendor proposals. Experience developing project schedules and determining realistic construction durations. Strong understanding of cost risk, contingency, exclusions, assumptions, and scope development. Proven ability to manage multiple estimates and deadlines simultaneously. Strong written and verbal communication skills. High level of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail. Ability to work independently and make sound estimating decisions with limited supervision. Valid driver's license. Preferred Experience Candidates with significant experience in the following areas will receive strong consideration: Pipeline construction Compressor stations and pipeline facilities Oil and gas terminals Industrial plants and facilities Mechanical piping Welding and fabrication Structural steel Civil and site work Concrete Equipment setting and installation Maintenance and turnaround work Brownfield construction Client-driven bid and procurement systems Experience estimating multi-discipline projects involving labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and complex schedules is highly preferred. What We Are Looking For This is not an entry-level or developmental estimating position. We are looking for an experienced estimator who can receive a bid package, determine what is required to execute the project, develop a complete estimate and schedule, identify risks, and confidently present the estimate to company leadership. The successful candidate should be able to understand field execution, challenge unrealistic assumptions, recognize missing scope, and determine whether labor hours, equipment, subcontractor pricing, and schedules make sense. This individual must be comfortable working in a fast-paced construction environment and communicating directly with executives, project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, vendors, and clients. We are looking for someone who can become a trusted senior resource within the company and take ownership of our estimating process.
