Job Description
Unique opportunity! We are looking for a bird care technician, experienced with parrots and passionate about their welfare. We run a sanctuary for parrots located on beautiful Whidbey Island, Washington. The Island sits in the rain shadow so enjoys many more beautiful blue days than the neighborhood Puget Sound. Nearby Langley is a destination art community and offers spectacular views and lovely beaches. The city of Seattle is an hour south and the college town of Bellingham is an hour north. The temperate climate, never too hot or too cold, offers plenty of opportunities for lush green hikes on our 80 acres, plus more trails close by. We have dark skies and quiet nights in a serene and bucolic setting. We are seeking a parrot care technician to work daily operations and care for our diverse parrot collection. This is an opportunity to make a meaningful hands-on impact for secondhand parrots, while being part of a passionate team.
- Care will include daily feeding, watering and health monitoring of all aviary birds. This includes oral, IM and subcu medication, and sometimes small emergencies such as toe bites. It also includes floor and perch cleanup, building habitat, creating and installing forage, plus keeping the facility clean. We will train you in all aspects of our bird care.
- Maintain health records, medical treatments, and monitor behavioral and health observations, coordinate and report concerns with manager.
- Be able to adapt and respond to changes and guidance by management as we adjust to the changing needs of the birds.
- Be detail oriented, able to work independently and follow through on daily tasks.
- Be able to move quickly on uneven terrain, gravel, sand and stairs, stay on your feet moving between tasks for several hours at a time, and lift 40-50 lb sacks occasionally.
- Communicate closely with the other technicians and management, including a daily written shift log. You must be able to read, understand and retain the shift logs of the other technicians and management. This is crucial for continuity of care.
- Foster positive engagement with visitors and volunteers.
- Ensure the aviary and facility are clean, safe and visually appealing.
