Job Description
About S&H Steel S&H Steel fabricates and erects structural steel for commercial and industrial construction projects. Our shop operations are built around clear sequencing, organized workflow, and alignment with field installation. Compensation is aligned with experience, skill level, and ability to consistently produce quality work within a production environment. Role Purpose The Structural Steel Fitter/Welder is responsible for fitting and welding structural steel components in accordance with shop drawings, production requirements, and quality standards. This role plays a key part in maintaining production flow by completing both fit-up and welding tasks accurately and efficiently while supporting fabrication sequencing and shop priorities. Core Responsibilities Read and interpret shop drawings and welding symbols Fit and assemble structural steel members including beams, columns, and miscellaneous steel Perform structural welding in accordance with approved procedures and quality standards Ensure proper alignment, fit-up, and weld quality prior to releasing work Maintain awareness of fabrication sequencing and prioritize work accordingly Identify and communicate any discrepancies in drawings, materials, or fit-up Work independently or with minimal supervision to complete assigned work Follow all shop safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area Key Skills & Attributes Strong ability to read and understand shop drawings Proficiency in both fitting and structural welding Attention to detail and pride in quality work Ability to maintain production pace without sacrificing accuracy Strong understanding of fabrication sequencing and workflow Self-motivated and reliable in a night shift environment Required Qualifications Experience fitting and welding structural steel Ability to pass required welding certifications/tests Familiarity with fabrication tools, equipment, and processes Ability to work night shift hours What Success Looks Like Steel is fitted and welded accurately with minimal rework Work supports fabrication sequencing and overall shop flow Production output is consistent and reliable Minimal defects or quality issues impacting downstream work Ability to complete work with limited supervision during night operations This Role Is Not For Someone Who… This role is not suited for someone who prefers to specialize in only one aspect of fabrication. This position requires the ability to both fit and weld while maintaining quality and production standards. Individuals who are not comfortable working independently, struggle with reading drawings, or prioritize speed over quality may find this role challenging.
