We are a proud union shop and this is a union position. The Layout Fitter is responsible for laying out, fitting, and preparing structural steel components for welding and final fabrication. This position requires the ability to read and interpret structural steel shop drawings, understand dimensions and tolerances, accurately lay out components, and assemble steel components according to engineered drawings and fabrication requirements. This is not a general fabrication position. We are looking for someone with hands-on experience fitting and laying out structural steel , including beams, columns, stairs, rails, platforms, miscellaneous metals, and other fabricated steel assemblies. Stair & Rail Experience Highly Desired Experience fitting and laying out structural steel stairs and railings is highly desired. Candidates with experience fabricating and fitting: Straight stairs Pan stairs Stringers Landings Stair platforms Handrails Guardrails Pipe rails Angle and channel rails Miscellaneous metals ADA-related rail components Stair and railing assemblies will receive strong consideration. A fitter who understands how to interpret stair and railing drawings, establish elevations and dimensions, calculate and verify stair geometry, and produce a properly fitted assembly is particularly valuable for this position. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Read and interpret structural steel shop drawings and fabrication details. Lay out structural steel components accurately using drawings, dimensions, elevations, and piece marks. Fit beams, columns, plates, angles, channels, HSS, stairs, rails, platforms, and miscellaneous steel. Accurately measure, mark, cut, position, and fit components prior to welding. Use squares, levels, levels/lasers, tapes, layout tools, and other measuring equipment. Verify dimensions, elevations, angles, locations, and fit-up before welding. Understand weld symbols and basic welding requirements. Tack weld or assist with tack welding components as required. Properly position and secure components for welding. Identify discrepancies between drawings and actual material or fabrication conditions. Communicate drawing, material, or dimensional issues to supervision or quality personnel. Make appropriate adjustments to achieve proper fit-up while maintaining drawing requirements. Work closely with welders, machine operators, QC personnel, and supervisors. Maintain proper identification and traceability of fabricated components. Perform quality checks throughout the fitting process. Maintain a clean and organized work area. Follow all company safety procedures and fabrication requirements. Perform other structural steel fabrication duties as assigned. Stair & Railing Responsibilities Candidates with stair and railing experience should be comfortable working with the geometry and layout associated with these assemblies.

Responsibilities may include:

Reading stair and railing fabrication drawings. Laying out stair stringers and treads. Establishing stair rise, run, pitch, and overall dimensions. Fitting stair pans, treads, landings, and supporting members. Fitting handrails and guardrails. Establishing proper rail heights and locations from the drawings. Fitting posts, pickets, supports, brackets, and connections. Verifying stair and rail dimensions before welding. Understanding how individual components fit together into the completed assembly. Recognizing dimensional problems before the assembly reaches welding or finishing. QualificationsRequired Previous experience as a structural steel fitter or layout fitter . Ability to read and understand structural steel shop drawings. Strong understanding of structural steel fabrication methods. Ability to accurately measure and lay out steel components. Ability to use a tape measure, square, level, and other layout tools. Ability to understand dimensions, elevations, angles, and tolerances. Ability to recognize dimensional and fit-up problems. Ability to work independently and as part of a fabrication team. Strong attention to detail. Commitment to quality and safe work practices. Highly Desired Previous stair fabrication and fitting experience. Previous handrail and guardrail fabrication experience. Experience fitting structural steel stairs and platforms. Experience with miscellaneous metals. Experience fitting HSS, channels, angles, and plate. Experience working from detailed fabrication drawings. Experience in an AISC-certified structural steel fabrication environment . Ability to perform basic layout calculations and determine stair geometry. Experience working with welders and understanding welding sequence and distortion considerations. What We Are Looking For We are looking for a fitter who can look at a set of drawings and understand how the finished piece needs to be built before picking up a piece of steel. The successful candidate should be able to independently interpret drawings, determine component locations, establish accurate layout points, fit assemblies, and identify potential problems before they become rework. A strong fitter understands that accuracy at the layout and fit-up stage directly affects welding, quality, production, and ultimately whether the finished assembly fits in the field.

General warehouse workers General laborers without structural steel fitting experience Light-gauge metal fabricators without structural steel experience Welders whose experience is limited to welding already-fitted assemblies General manufacturing assemblers without structural steel layout experience We are looking for an experienced structural steel fitter who knows how to build from a drawing. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and work for extended periods. Ability to bend, stoop, climb, kneel, and work in various positions. Ability to work around large structural steel members and heavy fabrication equipment. Ability to safely handle tools and materials within applicable limits. Ability to work around welding, grinding, overhead cranes, forklifts, and other industrial equipment. Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment. Ability to work in a heavy industrial steel fabrication environment. Safety & Quality Safety and quality are fundamental requirements of this position. Employees are expected to follow all company safety procedures, fabrication procedures, quality requirements, and applicable OSHA requirements. Fitters are expected to stop and communicate when drawings, dimensions, material, or field conditions do not appear correct rather than proceeding with an assembly that may result in defective work or rework. Experience Level 3+ years of structural steel fitting and layout experience preferred. Stair and railing fabrication experience is highly desired. Candidates with significant experience fitting structural steel, stairs, rails, platforms, and miscellaneous metals are encouraged to apply.
