Job Description
Overview Work location Newport News, Virginia We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Ship Fitter to join our maritime construction and fabrication team. The Ship Fitter will be responsible for assembling, fitting, and welding metal components to construct, repair, and maintain ships and marine structures. This role requires a strong understanding of metal fabrication, blueprint reading, and welding techniques, ensuring all work adheres to safety standards and technical specifications. The ideal candidate will bring construction site experience, mechanical knowledge, and proficiency with measuring instruments to support our mission of delivering high-quality maritime solutions. Responsibilities Interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and fabrication shop drawings to accurately assemble ship components. Measure and mark metal materials using calipers, micrometers, and other measuring instruments to ensure precise fitting. Cut, shape, and fabricate sheet metal and other metal materials utilizing plasma cutters, power tools, and hand tools. Perform welding operations including SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) in accordance with AWS (American Welding Society) standards. Assemble structural components using mechanical fabrication techniques while adhering to safety protocols. Use shop math to calculate measurements, material requirements, and fabrication dimensions accurately. Conduct quality inspections of welds and fabricated parts to meet project specifications. Maintain a clean and safe work environment by following all safety procedures on construction sites. Collaborate with team members to meet project deadlines while ensuring high standards of craftsmanship. Support continuous improvement initiatives related to fabrication processes and safety practices. Experience Construction site experience in shipbuilding or metal fabrication environments is highly preferred. Proficiency with blueprint reading and interpreting technical drawings for mechanical assemblies. Hands-on experience with various welding techniques including SMAW, Familiarity with measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and shop math calculations. Demonstrated knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, assembly, machining, plasma cutting, and mechanical blueprint interpretation. Experience working with metal materials in a fabrication shop or construction setting. Strong understanding of safety protocols related to welding, cutting, grinding, and working on construction sites. Ability to operate power tools safely and efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Mechanical knowledge relevant to shipbuilding processes including assembly of structural components. Knowledge of American Welding Society standards is advantageous.
