Job Summary Tactical Automation designs and manufactures large custom switchracks, structural skids, control systems, and engineered industrial equipment for the energy industry. We are looking for a structural metal fabricator who can turn raw steel into accurate, square, production-ready assemblies. This is a hands-on shop position involving layout, cutting, coping, fit-up, surface preparation, tack welding, and finish welding. The work is substantial. Our fabricators handle wide-flange beam, channel, angle, plate, tubing, and other structural members, then build equipment that may ultimately weigh many thousands of pounds. This is not a repetitive production-welding position. Every project is different, and successful employees take pride in accurate fit-up, sound welds, clean workmanship, and equipment they can stand beside and say, "I built that." What You'll Do As a Structural Metal Fabricator, you will build the frames, skids, supports, and structural assemblies used in Tactical's custom industrial equipment. Read fabrication drawings and cut lists, then lay out structural steel accurately using tape measures, squares, levels, and other layout tools. Cut, cope, notch, bevel, drill, grind, and prepare wide-flange beam, channel, angle, plate, tubing, and other structural members. Fit, clamp, square, level, and tack structural members before final welding. Perform MIG and flux-core welding on carbon-steel assemblies. Clean mill scale, rust, slag, spatter, sharp edges, and surface contamination as required for fabrication and coating. Verify critical dimensions, diagonals, alignment, weld preparation, and finished workmanship throughout the build. Move and position material safely using forklifts, overhead lifting equipment, fixtures, and team lifts as appropriate. Work with supervisors, quality personnel, and engineering to resolve drawing or fit-up discrepancies. Maintain an organized work area and follow established welding, material-handling, and shop-safety procedures. What We're Looking For The strongest candidates generally: Have hands-on structural-steel fabrication, fitting, or welding experience. Can read a tape measure, work with fractions, and transfer dimensions accurately. Understand fit-up, squareness, alignment, joint preparation, and weld sequence. Can safely operate common fabrication tools and recognize when equipment or consumables are not performing correctly. Produce consistent MIG or flux-core welds and are willing to complete a practical weld and fabrication test. Pay close attention to detail and inspect their own work before requesting final inspection. Show up reliably, accept direct feedback, and work productively as part of a team. Maintain quality when production demands increase instead of rushing poor work forward. Relevant Experience Structural skids, switchracks, pipe racks, platforms, equipment frames, trailers, tanks, or similar heavy fabrication. Wide-flange beam, channel, angle, plate, rectangular tubing, and carbon-steel assemblies. Band saws, abrasive or cold saws, plasma cutters, grinders, drills, magnetic drills, and fabrication fixtures. GMAW/MIG and FCAW/flux-core welding in a manufacturing or fabrication-shop environment. Work Environment Active industrial fabrication and welding shop. Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, climbing, tool use, and work around large steel assemblies and material-handling equipment. Regular exposure to welding arc, sparks, fumes, grinding dust, noise, heat, humidity, and changing temperatures. Required personal protective equipment must be worn, and established hot-work, lifting, and shop-safety procedures must be followed at all times. Why Tactical? At Tactical, you will fabricate large custom equipment rather than repeat the same small part every day. Our structural work becomes the foundation for complete industrial control and measurement systems used by major energy companies. You'll work with an experienced fabrication team and engineering support while building projects with visible results. If you take pride in accurate fabrication, strong welds, and equipment built to last, we'd like to meet you.
