Job Overview We are looking for a hands-on Drill & Tap Technician to join our steel fabrication team. This position focuses on drilling and tapping holes in structural and miscellaneous steel using shop drawings, work orders, and supervisor instructions. The job also involves rigging, forklift operation, layout corrections, material handling, and final detail work. You will work closely with our QA/QC team to make sure parts are accurate and meet quality standards. Some welding is required , and we are willing to train the right candidate in MIG, TIG, and spool gun welding. This is a physical, production-focused shop position for someone who works safely, pays attention to detail, and takes pride in doing quality work. Duties Operate drill presses, magnetic drills, milling machines, and other fabrication equipment to drill and tap structural steel. Read shop drawings, cut lists, and work orders to determine hole sizes, locations, and thread specifications. Set up steel components using clamps, fixtures, and jigs for accurate drilling and tapping. Select appropriate drill bits, taps, speeds, feeds, and cutting fluids based on material and thickness. Inspect drilled and tapped holes for proper dimensions, thread engagement, and fit-up. Perform layout corrections, deburring, and final detail work on fabricated steel components. Operate forklifts and assist with rigging and positioning steel throughout the fabrication process. Work with QA/QC to identify and address fabrication issues and ensure finished components meet specifications. Perform welding as needed, with training available in MIG, TIG, and spool gun welding. Required Skills & Qualifications Basic experience working in a fabrication or industrial shop environment Ability to safely operate drill presses, magnetic drills, and hand tools Ability to learn and apply drilling and tapping principles Ability to use measuring tools such as tape measures, calipers, and squares Ability to lift, move, and position steel materials with or without mechanical assistance Dependable attendance and strong work ethic Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team Ability to work in a fast-paced environment Self-starter with the ability to solve problems and collaborate with a supervisor on solutions Preferred Qualifications Previous experience drilling and tapping structural steel Familiarity with AISC fabrication standards Experience working from shop drawings Forklift or overhead crane experience, or willingness to be trained MIG welding experience CNC machine experience Willingness to work overtime
