This hands-on role involves interpreting blueprints, fitting and assembling structural components, and performing welding and fabrication processes while ensuring all work meets established quality and safety standards. Responsibilities
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, work packages, bills of material, weld symbols, and sketches with little to no assistance.
- Plan and perform complex layout, fit-up, assembly, and dimensional verification of plate, structural shapes, and miscellaneous fabrications.
- Determine practical fabrication methods and work sequence while protecting safety, quality, schedule, and downstream operations.
- Identify material, piece marks, orientation, weld requirements, reference lines, and assembly sequence before fabrication begins.
- Verify dimensions, alignment, fit-up, completeness, and required tolerances before releasing work for welding or inspection.
- Safely operate applicable fabrication equipment, measuring tools, overhead cranes, and rigging within qualification limits.
- Recognize drawing, material, dimensional, or constructability issues and coordinate with supervision, Quality, or Engineering to resolve them.
- Perform self-inspection, correct deficiencies, and maintain work that meets applicable drawings, procedures, codes, and quality requirements.
- Apply sound practices for distortion control, material handling, weld preparation, and protection of completed work.
- Coordinate effectively with supervisors, welders, quality personnel, and other trades to maintain workflow.
- Provide day-to-day guidance and demonstrate proper fabrication methods to Fabricator II and III employees when assigned.
- Maintain an orderly, professional work area and ensure company equipment, tools, and materials are properly used and cared for.
- Communicate progress, constraints, and needed assistance in a timely manner.
- Perform other duties consistent with the responsibilities of the position. Experience
- Ability to interpret fabrication drawings, technical specifications, weld symbols, bills of material, and production work packages.
- Strong working knowledge of structural layout, fit-up, assembly, fabrication tolerances, and constructability.
- Ability to plan and sequence assigned work independently while maintaining safe and efficient workflow.
- Ability to identify problems, make sound decisions within the scope of the position, and escalate issues appropriately.
- Knowledge of shop math principles essential for precise measurements and calculations during fabrication tasks
- Experience operating power tools and machinery used in metal fabrication.
- Understanding of safety protocols related to welding, cutting operations, and working within shop environments.
- Basic knowledge of ABS codes & standards applicable to ship building fabrication projects is preferred Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; recognized craft apprenticeship or equivalent training preferred.
- Minimum four years of heavy industrial, structural fabrication, or shipbuilding experience.
- Demonstrated ability to independently perform complex layout, fit-up, assembly, and dimensional verification.
- Demonstrated ability to execute work from engineering drawings, specifications, and production work packages with little to no assistance.
- Working knowledge of fabrication equipment, overhead crane operations, rigging practices, dimensional control, and distortion management.
- Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions, safety requirements, quality procedures, and company policies.
