Job Overview Join our team as an Underground Operator. We are looking for an experienced, safety-conscious operator with a strong background in underground construction, utility work, and fiber/conduit infrastructure. The ideal candidate should be comfortable operating heavy equipment, locating underground facilities, installing manholes and handholes, and performing conduit and fiber-related work. Responsibilities Operate excavators, loaders, drilling equipment, and other underground construction equipment safely and efficiently. Locate underground conduit and utilities using a Falcon F5 locator. Perform locating to determine depth and running line of underground conduit. Install and upgrade manholes and handholes, including excavation, placement, grading, and backfill. Work safely around existing fiber-optic facilities and other underground utilities. Blow mule tape through conduit. Run mandrels through conduit to verify conduit integrity and identify obstructions. Pull and blow fiber-optic cable through underground conduit systems. Assist with locating and exposing conduit obstructions, damaged conduit, and existing underground infrastructure. Perform horizontal drilling and assist with HDD operations when required. Read and understand construction plans, utility drawings, and project specifications. Perform routine inspections and basic maintenance on equipment. Operate support equipment such as water trucks, forklifts, vacuum equipment, and other construction machinery as required. Perform manual labor, material handling, excavation, and underground construction activities. Follow all OSHA requirements, PPE requirements, and company safety procedures. Maintain equipment inspection records, daily reports, and other required project documentation. Work closely with the foreman and crew to complete underground construction activities safely and efficiently. Requirements Proven experience in underground construction, utilities, fiber/conduit work, or similar underground operations. Experience operating excavators, loaders, drilling equipment, and other heavy machinery. Experience locating with a Falcon F5 locator is required. Must know how to set manholes and handholes. Must have experience blowing mule tape, running mandrels, pulling fiber, and blowing fiber. Must understand how to work safely around existing and active fiber-optic facilities. Ability to locate conduit depth and running line and assist with identifying underground obstructions. Ability to read construction plans and understand underground utility layouts. Strong mechanical knowledge and ability to perform basic equipment inspections and troubleshooting. Knowledge of OSHA requirements and underground construction safety practices. Ability to perform physical labor and heavy lifting safely. CDL and equipment certifications are preferred. Must be dependable, safety-conscious, and able to work effectively as part of an underground construction crew. Must be comfortable working outdoors and in varying weather and jobsite conditions.
