$32.00-$45.00 per hour Valley View Excavating & Construction is hiring experienced underground utility laborers and pipelayers for commercial, civil and site-development projects throughout Northern California. This is not an entry-level laborer position. We are looking for people with real underground experience who can step onto an active pipe crew, understand the work being performed and contribute immediately with limited supervision. If you know how to install sewer, storm drain, domestic water and fire water systems—and understand what it takes to keep an underground crew productive—we want to talk to you. What You'll Be Doing Depending on experience and assignment, responsibilities may include: Installing sanitary sewer, storm drain, domestic water and fire water systems Installing PVC, HDPE, ductile iron and other underground piping systems Setting and maintaining pipe to proper line and grade Preparing trench bottoms, bedding and pipe foundations Cutting, beveling, fitting, joining and assembling pipe Installing valves, fittings, hydrants, cleanouts, services and other appurtenances Installing manholes, catch basins, inlets and other underground structures Making service and utility connections Reading civil plans, utility plans, grade stakes and basic construction layouts Checking elevations, slopes and grades Working directly with excavator and equipment operators during trenching and pipe installation Spotting equipment and communicating clearly with operators Placing bedding, shading and backfill Assisting with compaction operations Performing or assisting with pressure testing, flushing and other required utility testing Operating pumps, compactors, saws and other underground construction tools and equipment Maintaining tools, materials and a clean, organized work area Following trench safety, shoring, trench shield and excavation safety requirements Helping the crew maintain safe, efficient production throughout the workday What We're Looking For The ideal candidate: Has previous hands-on underground wet utility construction experience Understands the basic sequence of underground pipe installation from excavation through backfill Can identify common pipe, fittings, valves and underground utility materials Can perform assigned underground work without constant supervision Understands line, grade and pipe slope Can read and understand basic civil utility plans Knows how to work safely and efficiently around excavators and other heavy equipment Understands trench and excavation hazards Communicates effectively with foremen, operators and other crew members Takes pride in quality workmanship and production Anticipates what the crew needs next rather than waiting to be told every step Is dependable, productive and ready to work Experience as an underground utility laborer, pipelayer, lead pipelayer, underground lead man or underground foreman is highly desirable. Minimum Qualifications Previous underground wet utility construction experience Experience installing one or more of the following: Sanitary sewer Storm drain Domestic water Fire water Ability to safely work in and around excavations and active heavy construction equipment Ability to understand and follow verbal and written work instructions Ability to work effectively as part of a construction crew Reliable transportation to assigned jobsites Ability to safely perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation Preferred Experience Additional consideration will be given to candidates with experience in: Commercial and industrial site development Municipal utility construction Water main and fire water installation Sanitary sewer mains and laterals Storm drain systems Ductile iron pipe and mechanical-joint fittings HDPE pipe and fusion PVC pressure and gravity systems Fire hydrants and valve assemblies Manholes and precast concrete structures Trench shields and shoring systems Lasers and grade-control equipment Civil construction plan reading Utility testing and commissioning Physical & Work Environment This is a field construction position requiring work outdoors in varying weather and site conditions. The position regularly involves standing and walking on uneven terrain; bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching and working in excavations; handling construction tools and materials; and working in close proximity to heavy construction equipment. Employees must be able to safely perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. Compensation $32.00-$45.00 per hour Actual starting wage will be based on relevant underground utility experience, demonstrated skills, qualifications and the level of responsibility the employee is capable of performing upon hire. We are willing to pay toward the upper end of the range for experienced pipelayers and underground utility personnel who can demonstrate the ability to work productively with limited supervision. What Success Looks Like We're looking for someone who can receive direction from a foreman, understand what is being built and get to work without needing to be taught the fundamentals of underground construction. A successful candidate should be able to look at the day's work, understand the installation being performed, work effectively with the equipment operator and other crew members, and help move the job forward safely and productively.
