Scope:

Under general supervision, the Well & Pump 2nd Man supports and assists the rig operator in managing pump operations, including drilling, well rehabilitation, and abandonment activities. This position plays a critical role in ensuring work is performed safely, efficiently, and to high-quality standards while adhering to Smyth Industries' policies, safety requirements, and commitment to operational excellence.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

Rig Operations:

Assist with daily rig operations under direction of the rig operator | Support pump and drilling, rehabilitation, and abandonment tasks | Ensure well openings are secured in accordance with safety standards | Review daily work orders to understand scope, priorities, and sequencing.

Crew & Site Management:

Prepare crew with required materials, tools, and equipment | Direct and support third man position to ensure tools and equipment are ready and properly staged | Maintain a clean, organized, and safe worksite | Ensure all personnel comply with PPE and site safety requirements.

Equipment Maintenance:

Perform daily inspections of drill & pump rigs, pumps, and related tools | Inspect drill line, cables, bearings, and mechanical components | Coordinate scheduled maintenance and repairs with the Fleet Manager | Support preventative maintenance and cleanliness of assigned vehicles and equipment.

Field Performance:

Monitor operations for efficiency and performance | Inspect well site for adverse ground control conditions | Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and proper handling and disposal of waste materials | Perform EODP - for vehicles used.

Safety & Compliance:

Comply with Smyth Industries' safety policies and procedures | Identify and address unsafe conditions | Respond promptly to emergencies or equipment failures | Assist in documenting accidents, near misses, and safety incidents in accordance with company procedures.

Reporting & Communication:

Complete daily driller logs, job documentation, and timecards accurately | Communicate job progress, issues, and delays to the Division Manager | Record operational and performance data for compliance and future reference.

Training & Leadership:

Assist in training and mentoring new crew members on drilling operations, equipment uses, maintenance practices, and safety procedures | Lead by example in safety, professionalism, and work quality.

Minimum Qualifications :

2-4 years of progressive water well drilling and pump experience | Demonstrated hands-on rig operations and pump installation and testing | Proven ability to support daily rig activities under the direction of the rig operator | Working knowledge of jobsite safety, compliance, and operational procedures | Valid driver's license, pass MVR and drug screening | lift/carry 50 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications :

Experience with oxygen/acetylene cutting and welding certification | CDL Class A or B | Forklift certification | Confined space certification | Bilingual (English/Spanish).
