Job Title:
Heavy Equipment Operator Job Description This role involves operating a wide range of heavy equipment for an excavation company that services projects across the Milford to Greenwich area. The heavy equipment operator will meet directly on job sites, work with minimal supervision, and take ownership of day-to-day site operations while ensuring safe, efficient, and precise execution of excavation and grading activities. Responsibilities Operate a variety of heavy equipment, including excavators, payloaders, minis, dozers, backhoes, forklifts, skid steers, front-end loaders, rollers, and other heavy machinery as needed on excavation and civil construction projects. Run the job site independently by following directions provided at the start of the day and completing assigned tasks without constant on-site supervision. Perform fine grading and general grading work to meet project specifications and ensure proper site preparation. Execute trenching, civil site work, and other civil construction activities safely and accurately. Read and interpret blueprints to understand project requirements, site layouts, and excavation plans. Use lasers and other layout tools to establish grades, elevations, and reference points for excavation and grading work. Troubleshoot and adjust equipment operation in the field to ensure machines run efficiently and safely. Coordinate and communicate effectively with subcontractors and customers on site to support smooth project execution. Follow all safety procedures and site rules while operating equipment and performing general labor tasks as needed. Conduct basic equipment checks and report any mechanical issues or maintenance needs promptly. Essential Skills Proven ability to work independently and run a job site, completing tasks based on directions provided without ongoing supervision. Reliable transportation to drive directly to construction sites each morning. Strong knowledge and hands-on experience operating heavy equipment, including minis up to 60-ton machines such as excavators and loaders. Proficiency in operating excavators, payloaders, dozers, backhoes, forklifts, skid steers, front-end loaders, rollers, and other heavy equipment. Experience with fine grading, general grading, trenching, and civil site work within a construction environment. Ability to read and interpret blueprints for excavation and civil construction projects. Ability to use lasers and other site layout tools to set and maintain accurate grades and elevations. Attention to detail to ensure precise work and adherence to project specifications. Ability to work effectively with subcontractors and customers, demonstrating clear communication and professionalism. Capability to run and troubleshoot machines in the field to maintain safe and efficient operation. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in civil construction and civil site development. Experience in general labor tasks on construction sites in addition to equipment operation. Comfort working across multiple job sites within the Milford to Greenwich area. Workdays typically start on site each morning, requiring punctual arrival directly to the job location. The environment is hands-on, safety-focused, and fast-paced, with collaboration among equipment operators, general laborers, subcontractors, and customers. Appropriate workwear suitable for construction sites, including sturdy footwear and protective gear, is expected. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Plainville, CT. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $30.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
