Road Sweeper / Street Sweeper Operator - Job Description A Road Sweeper Operator operates specialized street-sweeping equipment to clean roadways, construction zones, shoulders, parking areas, and other paved surfaces. The position helps maintain safe and clean roadways by removing dirt, sand, gravel, leaves, construction debris, and other materials.
CDL Street Sweeping Operator:
$20-$22/hour, Typical duties include: Operate a street/road sweeper safely on city streets, highways, and construction sites. Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the sweeper and report mechanical or safety issues. Operate sweeping brushes, vacuum systems, water systems, and other equipment controls. Remove dirt, gravel, construction debris, and other materials from roadways, curbs, gutters, and work zones. Follow designated routes, work schedules, traffic laws, and jobsite safety procedures. Work safely around traffic, construction crews, pedestrians, and heavy equipment. Perform basic cleaning and routine maintenance of the sweeper. Communicate with supervisors and other crew members regarding routes, work areas, hazards, and equipment concerns. Complete daily vehicle, mileage, inspection, or work documentation as required. Follow company safety policies and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Common qualifications:
Valid driver's license with a safe driving record CDL may be required depending on the vehicle Ability to work outdoors and in varying weather conditions Ability to work early mornings, nights, weekends, or changing shifts Good safety awareness; and experience operating commercial vehicles or heavy equipment is beneficial. For someone transitioning into this position: CDL driving Forklift operation Warehouse equipment operation Heavy equipment, construction Landscaping Sanitation Delivery driving Material-handling experience can all provide useful transferable skills.
