Exempt Position Summary The Heavy Equipment Instructor is responsible for providing rigorous, industry-aligned instruction to high school students on the safe and effective operation of heavy machinery, including excavators, bulldozers, and backhoes. The instructor prepares lesson plans, ensures OSHA compliance, and teaches NCCER- aligned curriculum. This role requires at least five years of industry experience and strong instructional skills. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Develop and deliver engaging lessons that include classroom instruction, lab activities, and practical field experience in heavy equipment operation. Teach, model, and enforce OSHA safety standards, maintenance procedures, and equipment safety. Build course outlines, goals, and objectives, incorporating NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) standards. Inspect, maintain, and coordinate repairs for program equipment (e.g., checking fluids, greasing parts, and conducting inspections) ensuring machinery is safe and functional. Establish a network to help students obtain industry certifications (e.g., NCCER) and demonstrate competencies aligned with workforce standards. Integrate employability skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and professionalism into daily instruction. Establish and maintain partnerships with local business and industry leaders to support work-based learning, internships, and career opportunities for students. Collaborate with CTAE leadership to ensure alignment with program standards, pathway requirements, and regional workforce needs. Support participation in Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs), such as Skills USA, to promote student leadership and technical skill development. Maintain a positive, safe, and structured classroom environment. Evaluate student progress, maintain accurate records, and provide feedback. Participate in school meetings, professional development, parent/teacher conferences, and school events. Supervise students during non-instructional times as assigned (e.g., homeroom, lunch, hall duty, extracurriculars). Uphold school and district policies, maintain professional conduct, and model continuous professional growth. Must be regularly, predictably, and reliably at work. Perform other duties as assigned.Qualifications Experience:
Minimum of five years of verified experience in heavy equipment operations.Certifications:
Preferred credentials include National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Instructor Certification and a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Must be eligible for or hold a valid Georgia CTAE Teaching Certificate (or ability to obtain through an approved alternative certification pathway such as GaTAPP).Education:
High school diploma or equivalent (GED).Skills:
Demonstrates instructional ability, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and basic computer proficiency. Physical Environment Work is performed in both classroom settings and hands-on, outdoor training environments. Requires lifting and maneuvering equipment, operating machinery, and working in various weather conditions.
