We are seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator to join our underground utility construction team. The Equipment Operator will be responsible for safely operating heavy equipment in support of water main, sewer, storm drain, and underground utility installation projects throughout Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. The ideal candidate will have experience working on heavy highway or underground utility projects and demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and teamwork. Key Responsibilities Safely operate heavy equipment including excavators, mini excavators, backhoes, wheel loaders, skid steers, dozers and other construction equipment as assigned. Perform excavation for water main, sewer, storm drain, utility, and roadway construction projects. Works with and assists crew in digging ditches and trenches, (un)loading materials, hoisting material, tools, equipment, and any related work. Excavate safely around existing underground utilities using utility markings, test holes, and safe digging practices. Work closely with pipe crews, foremen, superintendents, and project managers to complete daily production goals. Operates the equipment manually, and/or through electronic or other technical means.

NOTE:

Some equipment may require use of a GPS or other computer software; operators may be required to utilize equipment and software to perform essential job functions. Read and interpret construction plans, grade stakes, utility markings, and project specifications. Perform fine grading, trench excavation, backfilling, loading trucks, and material handling. Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip equipment inspections and report maintenance or repair needs. Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or repairs to the supervisor; cleans equipment; verifies equipment is in safe working order, is properly fueled, and is capable for performing the assigned task May perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance (filling fluids, adding lubricants, etc.) Follow company safety policies, OSHA regulations, trench safety requirements, and project-specific safety procedures. Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate job site and company safety and security standards to prevent property damage and injuries. Follows laws and prevents traffic disruption. Assist with general labor duties when equipment operation is not required. Maintain a clean and organized work area. Work safely around live traffic, existing utilities, and other trades. Communicate effectively with field personnel to ensure safe and efficient operations. Qualifications Minimum 3 years of heavy equipment operating experience in underground utility, heavy highway, or civil construction. Experience operating excavators is required. Experience with backhoes, loaders, skid steers, and dozers preferred. Experience installing water mains, sewer, storm drain, or underground utilities preferred. Ability to read utility markings, construction plans, and grade stakes. Knowledge of trench excavation and underground utility safety practices. Strong understanding of equipment safety and daily maintenance requirements. Ability to work as part of a construction crew in a fast-paced environment. Valid driver's license required. CDL Class B preferred; CDL Class A is a plus. OSHA 10 preferred. Competent Person Trenching & Excavation certification is a plus. Experience working on DOT, county, municipal, or utility construction projects preferred. Spanish speaking preferred.
