Job Description

Heavy Equipment Operator

The City of New Carrollton is seeking a motivated and dependable Heavy Equipment Operator to join our Public Works team. GENERAL DESCRIPTIONUnder general supervision, operates a variety of light-, medium-, and heavy-duty equipment and vehicles in support of the City's construction, maintenance, landscaping, grounds, infrastructure, and snow and ice removal operations. Performs skilled and semi-skilled manual labor and works as a member of a Public Works crew to maintain City streets, facilities, parks, playgrounds, athletic fields, trails, rights-of-way, and other public infrastructure.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES?

Safely operates a variety of light-, medium-, and heavy-duty equipment and vehicles, including but not limited to loaders, excavators, backhoes, compactors, dump trucks, commercial mowing equipment, snowplows, bulk collection vehicles, and other specialized equipment as assigned in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, manufacturer specifications, and established City policies and procedures.? Conducts required pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned equipment and vehicles and promptly reports unsafe, defective, or mechanical conditions to the Crew Supervisor.? Performs routine cleaning and basic care of assigned equipment and vehicles, including the removal of debris, mud, soil, and other materials.? Assists crews with stump removal, trail clearing, site preparation, excavation, grading, material handling, and other construction and maintenance activities.? Participates in the preparation, leveling, seeding, and maintenance of playgrounds, athletic fields, parks, and other landscaped areas.? Performs and assists with roadway and driveway maintenance, including pothole and pavement repairs, patching, grading, and related activities.? Loads, transports, and unloads materials, debris, equipment, and other supplies using assigned vehicles and equipment.? Performs manual labor associated with Public Works operations, including lifting, digging, shoveling, raking, clearing, hauling, and other physically demanding tasks.? Serves as an essential member of the City's snow and ice removal operations; operates snowplows, spreaders, and related equipment to clear and treat emergency routes, bridges, rights-of-way, parking lots, and other City facilities and public areas.? Responds to emergency and weather-related conditions and performs assigned duties necessary to protect public safety and maintain essential City services.? Maintains required certifications, licenses, and training and successfully completes annual safety training and examinations in accordance with MOSHA, OSHA, and other applicable safety requirements.? May provide work direction, assign tasks to, and train employees, interns, temporary laborers, volunteers, or other personnel performing related work.? Perform other job duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

?High school diploma or GED.?Two (2) years of experience operating heavy equipment.?Two (2) years of experience performing heavy manual labor in construction,maintenance, landscaping, Public Works, or a closely related environment.?Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors under varying weather conditions.?Ability to safely operate and perform routine inspections and basic care of heavy equipment and vehicles.?Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work effectively as a member of a crew.?Demonstrated ability to use a personal computer to access, read, compose, and respond to email communications.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIREMENTS

?Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B or higher.?Must maintain a satisfactory driving record and remain insurable under the City's vehicle insurance requirements.?May be required to obtain and maintain additional licenses or certifications based on assigned equipment and job responsibilities.

DEMANDSPhysical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.



Performs light to heavy work. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling may be required of objects over 50 pounds.
