About The Agency The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for nearly 2,000 miles of County-maintained roadways that range from rural to urban classifications. The transportation infrastructure includes 900 bridges, as well as shoulders, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy area -- all of which are maintained by staff of the Department. DPW&T's workforce keeps the County's various services moving by performing a myriad of activities which include removing snow and ice from County-maintained roadways, upgrading traffic signals, installing streetlights, clearing fallen trees, unclogging drainage inlets and maintaining stormwater management facilities, as well as performing roadway repairs ranging from potholes and sidewalk trip hazards to bridge repairs and resurfacing projects and more. Operates all vehicles and/or equipment designated as within the Equipment Operator II category by the Office of Storm Drain Maintenance which are used on construction and/or maintenance work projects. These include high-pressure jet/vacuum combination truck gradall, backhoe, tractor and trailer (lowboy), dozer, mobile concrete mixer, rubber-tired loader (2 cy. or larger), track loader (2 cy. or larger). In addition to tractor, single axle dump truck, tandem wheel dump truck, tractor/mower (sickle bar, rotary, flail, radial arm, batwing), skid loader. Operates equipment in stormwater infrastructure construction and/or maintenance of projects by the deadlines assigned by the supervisor. Complies with oral and written instructions (work orders) and requests additional supervisory instructions if orders are unclear or misunderstood. Identifies utility lines and overhead lines prior to beginning excavation projects to avoid injuries/accidents. Utilizes use tablet/iPad with GIS apps to determine asset attributes and fields. Operates keyboard driven equipment and use other automated technology to input, access and retrieve information from a laptop or desktop. Visual acuity is required to read data on computer monitors such as GIS maps. Maintains vehicles/equipment in good operating condition, including performing interior/exterior cleaning duties. Uses computer to send emails, receive, input and complete work orders in work orders/service request systems. Maintains vehicles/equipment in good operating condition, including performing interior/exterior cleaning duties. Participates in work-site safety set-up, e.g. setting barricades and cones, prepping for excavation, assisting with utility locates and prepping for confined space entry. Performs daily "walk-around" safety inspection of vehicle/equipment prior to operation. Checks tires, fluid levels, lights and warning devices and completes "Vehicle Inspection Report" by checking equipment against the list of items stated on the report. Complies with preventative maintenance schedule for assigned vehicles/equipment. Monitors status of assigned vehicle/equipment and schedules preventative maintenance as required. Operates vac-truck hopper controls, pressure relief valve, high-pressure water system with spreader and/or snowplow and effectively removes snow and ice from assigned area. Maintains records and prepares reports through the completion of daily work logs and work order forms. Operates equipment in a manner consistent with safety protocols, maintaining the safety of crew members and the public. Performs pre and post inspections to ensure equipment is in safe operating condition and assist crew members in performing semi-skilled tasks. Participates as an essential and critical employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and emergency weather related special operations. Promptly responds to assigned tasks when notified of reporting requirement for inclement weather/emergency conditions operations. Performs duties and tasks that may not be specifically listed but are included in the classification level typically associated with this class of work in order to meet department needs using departmental guidelines. Minimum Qualifications One year as an Equipment Operator I or completion of a standard grade school course. Two (2) years of experience operating light to heavy power equipment. A valid Class A, Class B, or equivalent commercial driver's license (CDL) with mandatory endorsements is required upon appointment in order to perform job-related duties and responsibilities. Candidate must successfully complete equipment/vehicle performance testing for equipment/vehicles associated with this class of work. Department of Transportation (DOT) medical exam. Preferred Qualifications Two (2) years of experience operating Jet or Vacuum truck. Valid ClassA CDL.
