General Duties:
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all large equipment and daily maintenance. The Heavy Equipment Operator is based out of the Facility Maintenance Shop (Woodshop).
Job Relationships:
  • Reports to: Roads Supervisor & Public Works Superintendent
Employees Supervised:
May occasionally supervise members from the grounds staff or temporary personnel for ditch work, revegetation or snow removal.
Job Specifications:
  • Two years of high school or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum of two years of equipment operating and daily maintenance experience in the area of backhoes, excavators, sand tucks, snowplows and front end loaders.
  • Five years of plow equipment operation preferred
  • Must possess a valid Class A2 commercial driver's license and authorization for WSI insurance coverage.
  • Job requires working weekends, holidays and overtime during peak demand times.
  • This is primarily outdoor work conducted in varying weather conditions, some being extreme in nature.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle a variety of tasks and challenging situations, in a calm and professional manner.
  • Must thoroughly understand mechanical and electrical functions of machinery, equipment and hydraulics and perform basic maintenance and repairs as needed.
  • Performs hand sanding and snow shoveling as needed with the safety of employees and guests in mind at all times (i.e. around hydrants).
  • Must pass a post offer, drug & alcohol screening as per DOT compliance prior to operating equipment on public roads.
  • Subject to WSI's Alcohol and Controlled Substance Abuse Policy based on the nature of the position and related duties.
  • Responsible for providing foul weather gear.
  • Must adhere to and promote the safety policies and procedures relating to the operation of heavy equipment and daily maintenance duties.
Specific Duties:
The Heavy Equipment Operator's duties are directly related to the operation and daily maintenance of all W.S.I. large equipment and occassional rental machinery, but are not limited to:
  • Operates excavator, backhoe, AEBI, dump trucks, snowplows, and snow blowers.
  • Performs daily maintenance including fluid level checks and greasing as necessary.
  • Participates in installation of water, sewer and electrical line.
  • Coordinates snow removal and sanding efforts with the Montana State Highway Department Roads Supervisor.
  • Notifies direct supervisor or manager of routine maintenance and repair needs for all vehicles and equipment and follows guidelines for vehicle maintenance and repairs in coordination with the Vehicle Maintenance Department. Safety
  • Wears personal protective equipment and safety equipment as required by safety policies and procedures.
  • Completes daily pre-trip vehicle inspection in accordance with DOT standards.
  • Operates fire suppression equipment as required.
  • Familiarity with emergency procedures including traffic control and protocalls in dealing with vehicle accidents on Big Mountain Rd.
  • Uses safety equipment at work sites to assure safety of TEAM members and guests.
  • Maintains a clean & orderly work environment at all times, i.
e. cleans vehicles daily.
Safety & Wellness:
All team members must be on constant alert for any unsafe conditions and work behaviors. This will involve, but not be limited to, periodic inspections of work and public areas. Follow up notification will be done to correct the condition or practice at the earliest possible opportunity
Work Environment:
  • Moderate physical activity required by handling objects up to 30 pounds frequently, 50 pounds routinely and 80 pounds occasionally.
  • Bending, sitting and standing will be required for durations of several hours at a time.
  • Ability to perform tasks in small spaces and awkward body posture on a regular basis.
  • Drive company vehicles in the performance of daily duties.
  • Flexibility in schedule changes on short notice is required.
  • Work is done on Winter Sports, Inc. property, U.S. Forest Service property and on the Big Mountain Road.
  • Non-smoking environment.
