Heavy Equipment Operator Salary $54,430.63 - $61,234.46 Annually Location Bismarck, ND Job Type Full-Time Job Number 202600072 Department Public Works Service Operations Division Roads and Streets Opening Date 07/22/2026 Closing Date 8/2/2026 11:59 PM Central FLSA Non-Exempt Description Benefits Questions Job Description This position operates heavy equipment in the repair and maintenance of city roads and streets. Examples of Duties
- Participates in a variety of snow and ice removal operations, on call 24/7 during winter months, operating 12 hour shifts 7 days a week during snow and ice fighting operations.
- Operates a backhoe, front-end loader, motor grader, and other heavy equipment.
- Makes asphalt street repairs with paver, roller, durapatcher, hotbox and cold mix patch; seals cracks.
- Operates brine making equipment.
- Operates a street sweeper to clean city streets.
- Installs traffic signs and pavement markings.
- Operates tractor and bush hog to maintain rights-of-way.
- Maintains radio contact with dispatchers to send and receive information.
- Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment; performs pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections.
- Sets up and assists in traffic control at work sites.
- Performs related duties. Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Class B driver's license with air brakes and tanker endorsement issued by the State of North Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated, obtained within six months of employment. Supplemental Information
- Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. City of Bismarck does not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
- Knowledge of the techniques, equipment, and supplies used in street and right-of-way maintenance.
- Knowledge of city and departmental safety policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of the geography of the city, including street names and locations.
- Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles, trucks and heavy equipment and the computerized controls/devices in the equipment.
- Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
- Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
