Job Title:
Heavy Equipment Operator Job Description This role operates a variety of heavy power construction equipment to excavate, move, and grade earth, support structure erection, and assist with concrete or other hard surface pavement work. You safely and efficiently handle machines such as excavators, backhoes, dozers, skid steers, vibratory compactors, and motor graders, while also performing basic equipment maintenance and repairs as needed in a safety-focused, drug-free environment. Responsibilities Operate multiple types of heavy power construction equipment, including excavators, backhoes, dozers, skid steers, vibratory compactors, and motor graders to support industrial construction activities. Excavate, move, and grade earth according to project specifications, ensuring accurate cuts, fills, and slopes. Assist with erecting structures by safely moving materials, preparing foundations, and supporting site preparation activities. Support concrete and other hard surface pavement work by grading, compacting, and preparing subgrades and work areas. Use forklifts and other material handling equipment to load, unload, and transport materials and equipment around the job site. Perform general labor tasks as needed to support the construction crew, including site cleanup, basic setup, and assisting other operators and trades. Conduct pre-operation and post-operation inspections of equipment to identify issues, ensure safe operation, and maintain compliance with safety standards. Perform minor repairs and routine maintenance on heavy equipment to keep machines in safe working condition and reduce downtime. Follow all site-specific and company safety protocols, including operating in a drug-free environment and using appropriate personal protective equipment. Communicate effectively with supervisors, spotters, and other crew members to coordinate equipment movements and maintain a safe, efficient workflow. Handle equipment controls smoothly and precisely to avoid damage to underground utilities, structures, and surrounding work areas. Maintain a clean, organized work area and properly secure equipment when not in use. Essential Skills Proven experience operating heavy industrial construction equipment, with 3 years of Industrial Construction Equipment Operator experience preferred. Demonstrated ability to operate excavators, backhoes, dozers, skid steers, vibratory compactors, and motor graders safely and efficiently. Forklift certification and hands-on experience operating forklifts in a construction or industrial environment. Skilled in operating trackhoes and similar heavy earthmoving equipment. Experience with material handling, including loading, unloading, and transporting materials using heavy equipment. Ability to perform basic machine operation checks, inspections, and routine maintenance on heavy equipment. Understanding of construction site safety practices and commitment to working safely in a drug-free environment. Capability to perform general labor tasks in support of construction operations. Strong situational awareness and ability to follow directions, site plans, and safety protocols. Physical ability to work outdoors and operate heavy machinery for extended periods. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working in industrial construction environments and on large-scale job sites. Experience operating skid steers, lulls, and other specialized construction equipment. Familiarity with using vibratory compactors and motor graders for grading and compaction work. Comfort working as part of a coordinated team with other operators, laborers, and trades. Ability to troubleshoot minor equipment issues and communicate maintenance needs promptly. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of New Albany, OH. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $33.00 - $35.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
