Position Summary The Light & Medium Duty Industrial Equipment Operator safely operates a wide range of light- and medium-duty industrial mobile equipment, aerial work platforms, and heavy-duty land maintenance equipment in support of construction, maintenance, operations, and grounds activities at industrial power generation, substation, and balance-of-plant facilities.
The operator moves and stages materials of varying size and weight, supports craft crews working at elevation, and maintains site roads, drainage systems, and vegetation across the property.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Material Handling & Aerial Work Operate forklifts (sit-down and stand-up), pallet jacks, and skid steers to receive, stage, and transport materials, equipment, and tools across the jobsite. Operate rough-terrain forklifts and telehandlers up to medium capacity (approximately 15,000 lb / 55 ft reach) to stage structural steel, transformer skids, switchgear sections, conduit racks, and other heavy unit loads. Operate scissor lifts, articulating boom lifts (up to approximately 80 ft platform height), and telescoping straight-stick boom lifts (up to approximately 125 ft) to support craft labor working at elevation on structures, equipment, and pole tops. Operate industrial yard tractors / terminal tractors (hostlers) to move trailers and containers within laydown yards and around the site. Operate ride-on sweepers and scrubbers as needed to maintain warehouse, shop, and operational areas. Support unloading of deliveries from flatbeds, vans, step-decks, and lowboys; coordinate with rigger or signal person when required. Stage materials in laydown yards per drawings and material handling plans; maintain organization and accessibility. Land & Grounds Maintenance Operate utility and agricultural-style tractors with attachments (rotary cutter / brush hog, batwing mower, finish mower, box blade, disc, post-hole digger, front-end loader) for site mowing, brush clearing, and grounds upkeep. Operate backhoe loaders, compact track loaders, mini excavators, and wheel loaders for trenching, drainage work, light grading, and bulk material handling. Operate motor graders, water trucks, vibratory rollers, and compactors to maintain site access roads, laydown yards, parking areas, and pads. Maintain firebreaks, fence lines, drainage ditches, culverts, and erosion control measures (silt fence, wattles, sediment basins) across the property. Perform vegetation management including mowing, brush clearing, and chipping; assist with herbicide application as directed by a licensed applicator. Support snow and ice removal on roads, walkways, and critical access points during winter months as required. General Operations & Safety Conduct daily pre-shift inspections of all assigned equipment using approved checklists; document deficiencies and remove unsafe equipment from service. Maintain awareness of load capacities, load charts, and center-of-gravity considerations during all material handling and lifting activities.
Perform routine equipment care:
refueling/charging, fluid checks, tire and track inspection, basic cleaning, and reporting maintenance needs. Communicate with foremen, craft labor, and ground personnel using radios, hand signals, and spotters as required. Adhere to all site safety rules including lockout/tagout (LOTO), barricading, fall protection, and PPE requirements. Participate in pre-task safety planning, daily Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and toolbox talks. Maintain clean and orderly equipment, work areas, and laydown yards. Report any unsafe conditions, near-misses, or equipment defects to the foreman immediately. Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Minimum 3 years of operating experience covering light
- and medium-duty industrial equipment (forklifts, rough-terrain forklifts, high-capacity telehandlers, aerial work platforms, yard tractors) and heavy-duty land maintenance equipment (tractors with implements, backhoes, mini excavators, motor graders, or similar) in a construction, industrial, or grounds maintenance environment.
Current operator certification for powered industrial trucks (forklift, including rough-terrain) and mobile elevating work platforms (MEWP / AWP) — may be obtained through site-provided training if not currently certified. Working knowledge of load charts, capacity ratings, stability principles, and safe material handling practices, including loads at extended boom reach. Working knowledge of basic grading, drainage, and erosion control principles. Valid driver's license; ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen, background check, and respirator fit test. Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, daily inspection checklists, and basic site drawings or laydown maps. Reliable transportation and consistent attendance. Preferred Qualifications Multi-equipment certification including high-capacity telehandler (15,000 lb+), rough-terrain forklift, articulating boom lift (80 ft+), telescoping boom lift (125 ft+), backhoe, and motor grader. 5 or more years of operating experience in a heavy industrial, refinery, or power plant setting. Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for water truck, yard tractor, and on-road equipment operation. Texas Department of Agriculture noncommercial pesticide applicator license (or equivalent) for herbicide application. Experience with road construction, light earthwork, vegetation management, or fence-line maintenance. Familiarity with material control, receiving, and laydown yard procedures. Prior experience supporting electrical, mechanical, or piping crews on a large industrial project. Basic radio communication and spotter training. Physical Requirements & Work Environment Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and to climb on and off equipment repeatedly throughout the shift. Ability to operate equipment in all weather conditions and over uneven, sloped, or unimproved terrain. Ability to wear a hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toe boots for extended periods. Long periods of seated operation with exposure to vibration, noise, dust, and heat. Year-round outdoor work including extreme heat, cold, wind, and precipitation typical of the Texas Panhandle. Rotating shifts and overtime required during major construction, outage, and storm-response events. Potential exposure to energized equipment, mobile equipment traffic, vegetation hazards, and chemical hazards typical of an industrial jobsite.
