Full Job Description Summary/Objective:
The Excavator Operator is responsible for safely operating heavy equipment to support underground utility projects. This role performs trenching, grading, and material handling while maintaining productivity and adherence to project specifications.
Essential Functions:

  • Operate excavators to perform trenching, digging, backfilling, and grading activities.
  • Follow project plans, grade stakes, and instructions from supervisors.
  • Safely maneuver equipment in and around job sites, utilities, and other team members.
  • Maintain proper slope, benching, and spoil pile placement per OSHA standards, including correct use of trench boxes and safety systems.
  • Perform daily equipment inspections and routine maintenance checks.
  • Identify and avoid underground utilities and other potential hazards and enforce hand-digging or potholing when working in proximity.
  • Load and unload materials as needed to support operations and use proper rigging techniques when lifting or moving materials.
  • Comply with all OSHA and company safety policies and guidelines, including use of stop-work authority when necessary.
  • Assist with other tasks as directed by the Foreman or Supervisor.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with crew members and supervisors.
  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures. Qualifications
  • Experience operating excavators in a construction or utility environment.
  • Ability to read grade stakes and interpret basic construction plans.
  • Knowledge of safe excavation practices and trench safety requirements.
  • Ability to work in varying weather and site conditions.
  • Strong attention to safety and detail.
