Job Description

The Stormwater Equipment Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment in the maintenance and construction of the City's stormwater drainage system. This includes operating excavators, Gradall ditching machines, backhoes, and dump trucks to clean, shape, and repair ditches, culverts, and stormwater structures. The position requires proven experience in safe equipment operation. Class B CDL preferred.
Key Responsibilities:
Equipment Operation Operate heavy equipment including Gradall, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, and dump truck in stormwater maintenance and repair work. Perform ditch shaping, culvert placement, and removal of sediment and debris from drainage channels. Load and transport materials using city trucks and trailers as assigned. Perform pre- and post-operation inspections and routine maintenance on assigned equipment. Stormwater System Support Assist in cleaning storm drains, inlets, and outfalls using appropriate equipment. Support stormwater crews in job site preparation, traffic control, and safety compliance. Assist with grading and erosion control measures in ditches and right-of-way areas. Maintenance & Safety Maintain equipment logs and report mechanical issues promptly. Follow all safety regulations including confined space, PPE, and excavation standards. Ensure work areas are left clean and safe following projects or repairs. Emergency Response Participate in after-hours emergency response for drainage issues, including storm and flood response. Assist with debris removal and access restoration during weather-related events. Support emergency preparedness and stormwater system inspection following heavy rainfall. Other Duties Perform other related duties as assigned. Skills & Competencies Proficient in safe operation of Gradall and other heavy equipment used in drainage maintenance. Knowledge of stormwater systems, ditch grading techniques, and erosion control practices. Ability to perform physical labor and work outdoors in all weather conditions. Strong safety awareness and compliance with city procedures and traffic control standards. Effective communication and teamwork skills. Education & Experience High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of 2 years of experience operating heavy equipment in construction or stormwater maintenance preferred. Experience operating a Gradall ditching machine preferred. Valid Texas Class B CDL preferred at time of hire.
