Pipelayer Laborer

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

include the following along with other duties that may be assigned.

Assists with the installation, alignment, connection, and sealing of water, sanitary sewer, storm drain, and other underground utility pipe.

Works in and around trenches and excavations in accordance with OSHA requirements and company safety procedures.

Reads grade stakes, cut sheets, plans, and basic elevations to help establish pipeline and grade.

Sets laser equipment, checks grade, and communicates line and elevation information to the pipe crew.

Prepares trench bottoms and pipe bedding by grading, shoveling, and placing stone or other approved materials.

Guides pipe sections into position using hand signals, taglines, chains, slings, and other approved rigging methods.

Installs and connects pipe, fittings, valves, manholes, inlets, fire hydrants, and related utility structures under supervision.

Cleans, lubricates, aligns, and secures gaskets, bells, joints, couplings, and other pipe connections.

Uses hand and power tools, including shovels, picks, grade rods, pipe saws, cut-off saws, compactors, and jackhammers.

Assists with trench backfilling and compaction while protecting installed utilities from damage or displacement.

Signals equipment operators to facilitate safe movement, placement, and adjustment of pipe and materials.

Assists with trench safety systems, including ladders, shoring, shielding, and access and egress requirements.

Performs maintenance of traffic and flagging duties when required.

Performs job site housekeeping and removes debris from work areas, trenches, and excavation piles.

Inspects tools, rigging, and assigned equipment before use and reports unsafe conditions or damaged equipment.

Maintains awareness of existing utilities and follows procedures for working near marked and exposed utility lines.

Works safely and responsibly at all times and follows instructions from the foreman or superintendent.

QUALIFICATIONS/MATH SKILLS

Ability to follow verbal and written directions and work effectively as part of a crew.

Ability to successfully pass a drug test.

Must be able to provide reliable transportation to and from assigned job sites.

Ability to safely handle basic hand tools, including shovels, picks, brooms, hammers, and saws, as well as larger tools such as pipe saws, compactors, and jackhammers.

Ability to understand basic pipe materials, fittings, gaskets, and installation methods.

Ability to read a tape measure and perform basic measurements.

Ability to identify common safety hazards associated with trenches, heavy equipment, suspended loads, and underground utilities.

Ability to perform light and heavy material handling.

Ability to perform job site housekeeping and assist with maintenance of traffic.

Flagger Certification is required when assigned to act as a flagger.

OSHA 10, CPR, and First Aid certifications are preferred or must be obtained as required by the company.

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide by 10s and 100s.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk; and hear. The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, or balance and may be required to enter and exit trenches using ladders. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance or appropriate equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works outdoors in varying weather conditions and is exposed to moving mechanical parts, heavy equipment, open excavations, trenches, uneven terrain, mud, dust, fumes or airborne particles, vibration, and loud noise. The employee may also be exposed to underground utilities, traffic, wet conditions, and toxic or caustic chemicals. Appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn, and all company safety policies and job site requirements must be followed.
