A Pipe Fitter installs and repairs pipe systems in commercial or industrial and manufacturing structures, such as pipes for heating and cooling systems. Works on pipes that carry gas, sprinkler systems, or pipes that carry steam under pressure.
The Plumbing Excavator is responsible for performing precision excavation work in support of underground plumbing installations and repairs. This role requires skilled operation of excavation equipment and a thorough understanding of trench grading techniques to ensure proper drainage, pipe slope, and compliance with plumbing codes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Operate excavators, backhoes, and trenching machines to dig trenches for underground plumbing installations including water mains, sewer lines, drain lines, and gas lines. Establish and maintain proper trench grade throughout excavation, ensuring correct pipe slope per plumbing code specifications (typically 1/4" per foot for gravity-flow systems). Read and interpret construction drawings, grading plans, and plumbing blueprints to determine required trench depth, width, and slope. Use laser levels, grade rods, and builder's levels to verify and maintain accurate grade throughout the length of each trench. Coordinate with the plumbing crew to ensure trenches are excavated to the correct dimensions and elevations prior to pipe installation. Shore and support trench walls as required by OSHA safety standards to prevent cave-ins and ensure a safe working environment. Backfill and compact trenches after pipe installation using appropriate equipment and materials to meet compaction specifications. Identify and safely work around existing underground utilities, following all dig-safe and utility-marking procedures (811 Call Before You Dig). Perform daily pre-operation inspections and basic maintenance on excavation equipment. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site in compliance with company and OSHA safety standards. Collaborate with project supervisors, plumbers, and other trades to coordinate workflow and minimize disruption. Complete daily work logs, equipment inspection reports, and other required documentation accurately.
GRADE KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
The Plumbing Excavator must demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of maintaining trench grade, including: Understanding of pipe slope requirements for various plumbing systems (sewer, storm drain, water service) and ability to calculate percent grade. Proficiency with grade-setting tools including laser levels, optical levels, grade lasers, story poles, and grade rods. Ability to read invert elevations from plumbing plans and translate them into accurate field excavation. Knowledge of how soil conditions affect trench stability and subgrade preparation. Understanding of bedding requirements and how subgrade elevation impacts finished pipe elevation. Competency in recognizing and correcting grade deviations during excavation before pipe is set.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Minimum 2 years of experience operating excavation equipment in a plumbing or underground utility environment. Demonstrated knowledge of trench grading and ability to maintain grade using standard leveling instruments. Familiarity with plumbing codes as they relate to underground pipe installation and slope requirements. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and site plans.
Preferred:
Experience with laser-guided trenching and grade control systems. Prior experience on commercial or municipal plumbing construction projects. Completion of an apprenticeship or vocational training in heavy equipment operation or underground utilities.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and dust. Capable of lifting and carrying up to 75 lbs. regularly. Ability to stand, walk, bend, and work in confined or awkward spaces for extended periods. Must be able to enter and exit excavation equipment safely.
