Job Title:
Traveling Gravity Sewer Pipelayer Job Description This role involves traveling to various project sites to install and maintain underground utility systems, with a primary focus on gravity-fed sanitary sewer, storm drainage, and water lines. The Traveling Gravity Sewer Pipelayer uses specialized tools and equipment to ensure precise pipe alignment, depth, and slope, while supporting excavation activities and maintaining strict safety standards on fast-paced civil construction projects. Responsibilities Install underground utility systems, including gravity-fed sanitary sewer, storm drainage, and water lines according to project specifications and plans. Install, align, and position pipe sections in trenches, ensuring proper seal, fit, and connection integrity. Use lasers, grade rods, and transit levels to verify that pipes are installed at the correct depth and slope for gravity flow. Assist with digging, preparing, and backfilling trenches, including placing bedding materials and compacting soil to required densities. Guide heavy equipment operators during trenching and pipe placement to ensure accurate excavation and safe operations. Support trench shoring and excavation activities to maintain stable and secure work areas. Work with PVC pipe and other common underground utility materials, ensuring proper handling and installation techniques. Coordinate with crew members and equipment operators to maintain productivity and meet project timelines in a fast-paced environment. Follow all OSHA and company-specific trench safety requirements to maintain a safe work environment. Continuously monitor the work area for potential hazards and report or address safety concerns promptly. Maintain a clean and organized worksite, including proper storage of tools, equipment, and materials. Travel to multiple job sites as required and adapt to varying site conditions and project needs. Essential Skills At least 4 years of experience as a gravity sewer pipelayer or in a closely related underground utility role. Hands-on experience installing underground utilities such as sanitary sewer, stormwater systems, and water lines. Proficiency in trenching, shoring, and excavation practices in a civil construction environment. Ability to use lasers, grade rods, and transit levels to set and verify pipe depth, alignment, and slope. Experience guiding heavy equipment operators during trenching and pipe placement. Knowledge of OSHA trench safety requirements and commitment to working safely at all times. Experience working with PVC pipe and related underground piping materials. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, safety-conscious construction environment. Strong understanding of stormwater and wastewater utility systems. Capability to perform physically demanding work, including working in trenches and outdoor conditions. Willingness and ability to travel regularly to different project locations. Additional Skills & Qualifications Heavy equipment operation experience in a civil construction or underground utilities setting. Experience in storm drain, stormwater, and wastewater system installation. Familiarity with underground utility layout and civil construction best practices. Hotel accommodations and per diem are provided while traveling to job sites. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Knoxville, TN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $30.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
