Education, Outreach and Mission Advancement Assistant/Cordinator Sierra This AmeriCorps position will be shared between the Sierra Club Mother Lode Chapter Placer Group, the Wildlife Heritage Foundation, and the Sierra Nevada Alliance in Placer County. The member will serve some of California's most precious watersheds by sharing information via social media platforms, coordinating events, and building partnerships to engage community members in protecting the environment. Opportunities to assist with salmon monitoring and restoration projects in support of other partner organizations will be a component of service. Members will connect regularly with several small non-profits and a community college in the region, leading to diverse conservation and stewardship experiences.
Sierra Club Placer :
Activities with Placer SC will center around improving environmental messaging through social media, community outreach, scheduling and leading naturalist/environmental outings, volunteer, and member recruitment. The member will increase community investment and involvement in the cleanup of local waterways. They will co-develop event ideas, recruit new attendees, and recruit long-time volunteers. They will assist with coordinating supplies and activities on the day of the event. The member will help weave together the shared missions of the Sierra Club and partner conservation groups. This provides an exciting opportunity to develop or hone skills in collaboration, communication, networking, and event organization. The member's goals are to help preserve and enhance watershed ecology in Placer County west of the Sierra Crest, through focused projects defined by Placer Group leaders and possibly involving other local enviro groups. The member will learn about local ecology so they can do environmental education and advocacy. They will have an opportunity to achieve the California Naturalist Certification, as one of our leaders has earned his.
WHF :
The SNAP member will work on a variety of projects related to the Wildlife Heritage Foundation's core management and monitoring responsibilities. Working closely with WHF staff, the fellow will assist with annual monitoring of conservation easements throughout California, with a particular focus on Preserves in the Sacramento area and the San Francisco Bay area. This will include taking on an independent role performing vegetation, wildlife, and infrastructure surveys, as well as performing hands-on service controlling invasive plant species, encouraging native plant propagation, monitoring and maintaining bird nest boxes, and assisting with special status species surveys under the supervision of a qualified biologist. In addition to fieldwork, a major component of this position will be drafting accurate and complete documentation of their observations, to be included in official reports filed by WHF to meet State and Federal conservation easement reporting requirements. The fellow will also take charge of outreach efforts at WHF, by developing and implementing an updated outreach program for volunteer recruitment and community events.
SNA:
The member will assist with community outreach and workforce development activities. This is a hybrid position serving in Placer County, partially remotely and requiring travel for in-person events and service days across the Sierra Nevada but primarily in the Placer County, Roseville/Lincoln area- this offers a variety of living locations.

assisting with a youth organizer conference, conduct outreach to high schools, adult education programs, and community organizations; tabling at local/regional event; press release development, social media and outreach materials development; planning and executing monthly educational opportunities such as naturalist hikes and webinars led by experts. Volunteer recruitment and support for events and projects. Represent the Host programs and organizations at public events, collaboration, and partner meetings. The Member has the opportunity to become certified as a CA Naturalist or Climate Steward, and become a Sierra Club Outings Leader. Outreach & Community Engagement SNA - Assist in planning/coordinating environmental events to enhance community engagement in and awareness of conservation efforts across the region. such as MLK Day, Great Sierra River Clean-up, SNAs Wild and Scenic Film Festival, Earth Days, and SNAP service days/weeks: Spring Training, Graduation, and Orientation planning. Note:
The Placer Group meets in South Placer County or Roseville, but service may take place across Placer County. The member will be assisted in becoming certified as a CA Naturalist or Climate Steward, they will complete Outings training, which certifies them to lead Sierra Club Outings. Diverse mentoring opportunities will be provided and the member will learn about Sierra Club's environmental education and advocacy priorities. This is a hybrid position but may be primarily remote or field based depending on season and project needs. The member will be required to attend in-person meetings, events, and engagement opportunities, and will have the chance to organize and facilitate educational and restoration projects with Sierra Club volunteers and partner organizations. This position requires significant office and desk work. The applicant must be organized, detail-oriented, good with scheduling, flexible, have some experience with project management, and be open to feedback. The supervisor has an "open-door" policy and welcomes questions and new ideas. The selected member must be comfortable working with minimal supervision and reaching out for support and information when needed.
Required Qualifications:
Driver's license, proof of insurance, a reliable vehicle, and willingness to drive it for projects that are off-site, sometimes for long distances (mileage is reimbursed by Host at the federal rate) Ability to walk on uneven terrain, carry a loads of up to 35 lbs, serve outdoors, perform labor with hand tools, in moderately high temperatures (80's) Willingness to serve as the face of Sierra Club at tabling and community education and/or naturalist events across Placer and Tahoe Ability to transport, set up and take down tabling materials weighing up to 35 lbs Ability to serve independently and part of a team Must be reliable, able to follow directions, maintain a positive and professional attitude at all times, dress appropriately for office and field service Must be well organized, efficient and possess good time management skills Must be creative, resourceful, and possess the ability to adapt to changing circumstances quickly Willingness to frequently serve on Saturday's to accommodate weekend events Excellent written and oral communication skills Ability to use Google, social media platforms, Gmail, and Google Calendar Desired qualifications, but NOT required: Bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences, political science, or a relevant community development field Interest in learning about environmental education and outreach to engage citizens in caring for the environment, including some naturalist and restoration activities Prior experience in social media management, newsletter or blog writing Basic understanding and experience with volunteer recruitment/management Willingness to be certified as a Sierra Club Outings Leader to work closely with the community college ECOS Club, and other local environmental groups to engage youth and community members to get outdoors to learn about their local environments Interest in learning about conservation, habitat restoration, invasive species management, native plant propagation, public environmental education or natural resource careers Prior experience in land management, ecological restoration, field biology, agriculture, or related fields Basic understanding and experience with power equipment Familiarity with Slack and Charity Proud While each SNAP Position has unique requirements related to the position's function, the SNAP Program has some general requirements: Must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the U.S. High School Diploma or GED (higher education degrees are highly recommended OR six months of relevant experience in restoration, monitoring, environmental education, or field work.
