A Pipe Fitter installs and repairs pipe systems in commercial or industrial and manufacturing structures, such as pipes for heating and cooling systems. Works on pipes that carry gas, sprinkler systems, or pipes that carry steam under pressure.
Job Summary The Pipefitter plans, installs, and repairs high-pressure and low-pressure piping systems used for manufacturing, commercial, or industrial applications. This role involves reading blueprints, accurately measuring and cutting materials, and preparing pipes for welding or mechanical joining, ensuring all systems meet strict safety and industry codes.
Key Responsibilities System Layout & Assembly:
Layout, assemble, install, and maintain pipe systems, pipe supports, and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment.
Blueprint Reading:
Interpret detailed isometric drawings, P&IDs, blueprints, and structural specifications to plan system layouts.
Material Preparation:
Securely measure, cut, thread, groove, and bevel pipes of various materials (carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, PVC) using saws, cutting torches, and pipethreading machines.
Fitting & Alignment:
Align and fit pipes together with welds, bolts, braze, solder, or adhesives, working closely with structural welders to prepare joints for codequality welding.
System Testing:
Inspect, examine, and test installed systems and pipelines using pressure testing, hydrostatic testing, or air gauges to locate and clear leaks.
Safety Enforcement:
Strict compliance with all shop or sitespecific safety regulations, including hotwork permits, lockout/tagout (LOTO) protocols, and OSHA guidelines.
Requirements and Qualifications Experience:
Minimum of 25 years of journeymanlevel pipefitting experience in a mechanical shop, industrial construction, or fabrication environment.
Technical Skills:
High proficiency in rigging, pipe fabrication math, and the use of specialized layout tools (e.g., wraparounds, framing squares, levels).
Certifications:
Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program or relevant trade school is preferred. NCCER certification for pipefitting is highly desirable.
Physical Demands:
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work in confined spaces, stand for extended periods, and comfortably work at heights or on scaffolding.
