Plumbers visit clients according to a schedule, either to perform an initial assessment or to follow up on a repair. A Plumber can remodel buildings to add new plumbing fixtures, install fire sprinklers, maintain water and gas lines, replace pipes, manage sewage systems and redirect pipes to prevent water damage. Emergency Plumbers are available 24/7 to respond to serious plumbing emergencies. On a standard appointment, they talk to the property owner, manager or tenant about the problem they are experiencing, then perform an inspection to diagnose the problem. They determine what kinds of pipes and fittings they need, ordering specialty parts from a supplier when necessary. Plumbers come up with a quote for their clients estimating how much the parts and labor cost, then come up with a timeline for completing the project. After completing a job, the Plumber can help schedule cosmetic repairs for damage caused by the initial leak or the repair process. A high school diploma or GED A valid plumber's license Three or more years of trade experience as a plumber or plumber's apprentice Thorough knowledge of plumbing system maintenance and repairs Time management skills Ability to drive company vehicles to various commercial and residential sites for work Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in client and co-worker relations Understanding of current field regulations Level 2 Intermediate Plumbing Diploma is preferred Level 3 Advanced Plumbing Diploma is desirable Pipe fitter Pipe Fitters are responsible for installing or repairing plumbing, and the duties range from fabricating piping and materials to assembling systems and ensuring they're running effectively and do not leak. Pipe Fitters may work on plumbing systems, heating and cooling piping, marine piping systems and more. Outside of the manual labor associated with pipe fitting, they have many responsibilities, including: Inspecting and repairing pipes running to related equipment, such as radiators and HVAC units Providing estimates on the cost of parts and labor Making recommendations about necessary repairs or changes to plumbing systems Meeting with clients and/or customers to determine their plumbing needs Pipe Fitters must possess a wide range of technical skills related to their profession. For example, they must be familiar with all the tools needed to assemble, fit and repair pipes and their associated plumbing systems. Pipe Fitters need welding experience and must be able to customize piping systems to meet a customer's needs. They must have experience with all components of piping systems, including brackets, clamps and hangers. Other important skills and qualifications for Pipe Fitters include: Customer service skills, as Pipe Fitters must communicate with clients or customers on a daily basis Technical skills to do their job accurately, including math and science skills Physical capabilities, as Pipe Fitters work in a physically demanding field and must be able to fit into tight spaces
