POSITION DESCRIPTION

Installs, repairs, and maintains plumbing systems in buildings and facilities, including water supply lines, drainage systems, pipes, drains, fittings, valves, and fixtures (e.g., sinks, toilets, showers, water heaters). Diagnoses and resolves complex plumbing issues by performing tests, inspecting systems with appropriate tools, and identifying the cause of leaks, blockages, or other malfunctions. Performs emergency repairs to prevent water damage and restore service promptly. Assembles, installs, and connects pipes and fittings using a variety of techniques, including the use of couplings, clamps, screws, cement, and soldering or brazing. Reads and interprets blueprints, schematics, and building codes to determine the layout of plumbing systems and ensure all work complies with legal and safety standards. Maintains records of installations and repairs. Operates a variety of hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment safely and efficiently. Adheres strictly to all safety procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintains a clean and safe work environment. Comprehensive knowledge of plumbing codes, regulations, and safety procedures. Skilled in the use of tools and equipment common to the plumbing trade. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to effectively diagnose and repair plumbing issues. Assist with masonry, carpenter, painting and electrical work orders and projects. Physical ability to perform manual labor, including lifting heavy objects and working in areas with limited space. Determine scopes of work, materials, labor and equipment from verbal orders or work orders. Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings. Develop bills of materials, acquire material quotes. Perform preventive maintenance checks and services on tools and equipment. Supervise inmate work crews (and follow BDCC inmate rules) and temporary detailed employees. Comfortable with operations while on ladders, scaffolding, roofs and other elevated surfaces. Maintain accountability for hand receipted tools and equipment. Maintain shop and work area to a state of readiness, cleanliness and safety. Attend mandatory LMD classes, scheduled safety meetings, classes and schools assigned by supervisor. Accessible after normal duty hours, weekends and holidays as required. Adhere to Installation Standard Operation Procedures. Operate truck, trailer, forklift, small excavator, and various other construction equipment. Perform other duties assigned.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma/GED required. 5-7+ years as a skilled plumber with 1-2 years in a supervisory role. Proficiency in reading manuals/blueprints, and understanding computer software, (Microsoft Office, Adobe) Strong communication, problem-solving, organization, and time management skills.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Must have a valid Driver's License, Social Security Card and Birth Certificate. Must be available to report to duty during emergency or disaster situations for extended hours over an extended period of time. Other periodic travel may be required. Must meet physical requirements to perform functions of the position. Must attend/complete all Louisiana Military Department (LMD) annual training and other training required for the position. Must adhere to the Code of Ethics and foster a Sexual Harassment-Free Environment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is not a remote position. Salary is paid by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) / Direct Deposit Only. A checking or savings account is required for employment. For positions requiring computer/email access selected applicant must qualify to obtain a Department of Defense Common Access Card (CAC) Card and maintain eligibility. LMD is a substance abuse and drug free workplace. The selected applicant must pass a pre-employment background investigation and pre-employment drug test. Thereafter, all employees are subject to random drug testing. To become an employee of the LMD you must be a current member of the Louisiana National Guard or eligible for membership in the Louisiana State Guard. The selected applicant must pass a pre-employment criminal background investigation prior to employment.
