This role combines machining, sheet metal fabrication, and welding to create, modify, and assemble components that meet strict quality and dimensional standards in a climate-controlled manufacturing environment. Responsibilities Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, and sample parts to determine dimensions, tolerances, sequence of operations, and setup requirements. Develop layouts and plan the sequence of operations for machining and fabrication work. Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or work pieces to guide subsequent machining and fabrication processes. Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, shapers, radial drill presses, end mills, and edge planers. Calculate and set machine controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, depth of cut, and angle of cut, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control programs. Set up and operate machines for trial runs to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data before full production. Start and observe machine operations to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance conditions and adjust machine controls or control media as needed. Locate and mark bending and cutting lines on work pieces and perform bending, cutting, and forming operations. Hammer, chip, and grind work pieces to cut, bend, straighten, and finish metal surfaces; preheat work pieces when required. Position, align, fit, and weld parts together using appropriate welding equipment to create strong and accurate assemblies. Design and construct templates and fixtures to support fabrication and assembly processes. Fabricate and assemble sheet metal products according to specifications and quality standards. Fit and assemble parts into complete assemblies, ensuring proper alignment and function. Verify conformance of work pieces and finished assemblies to specifications using precision measuring equipment and inspection methods. Verify dimensions and alignment of assemblies and make necessary adjustments to meet requirements. Install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment and test operation to ensure proper functionality and performance. Operate welding equipment to cut or weld parts as required for fabrication and repair tasks. Set up and operate machine tools commonly used in fabricating shops, including radial drill presses, end mills, and edge planers.
