Summary of Position:
The Installation Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the residential solar installation department, ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and in accordance with company quality standards. This role provides leadership to in-house service technicians while coordinating subcontracted design, engineering, and installation resources across engineering, permitting, warehouse, scheduling, and customer service teams to deliver an exceptional customer experience. The Installation Manager is accountable for operational performance, subcontractor and vendor quality control, procurement, team development, safety compliance, and continuous process improvement. This role reports to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and directly supervises two (2) in-house Service Technicians, while coordinating closely with subcontracted installation crews and the subcontracted engineering/design team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Oversee the day-to-day operations of the installation department, ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and on schedule. Request, review, and perform quality control (QC) on subcontracted solar plan sets, system designs, and design revisions prior to permitting, installation, and inspection. Request and coordinate subcontracted labor-only installation crews for solar equipment, battery storage, and electrical equipment; review and QC completed installation work for compliance with design specifications and company standards. Utilize lender and financing portals to manage project milestones, submit required documentation, and satisfy funding conditions throughout the project lifecycle. Handle all ordering and procurement of Bill of Materials (BOM) items, ensuring accurate, timely delivery of equipment and materials to job sites and the warehouse. Oversee and schedule in-house service technician teams, managing daily assignments, workload balancing, and service call prioritization. Monitor project aging across the installation pipeline and proactively assist in expediting stalled or at-risk projects to keep them on schedule. Lead, coach, and develop in-house service technicians and support staff to maintain high levels of performance and accountability. Monitor installation and design quality to ensure all work complies with company standards, manufacturer specifications, and applicable local, state, and federal codes. Partner with Scheduling, Permitting, Engineering, Warehouse, and Quality teams to ensure projects are installation-ready and completed without unnecessary delays. Manage subcontractor performance and relationships — including design/engineering and labor-only installation partners — to maximize productivity, quality, and operational efficiency. Conduct regular field visits, job site inspections, and safety audits to ensure compliance with OSHA requirements and company safety policies. Review project progress, identify operational challenges, and implement corrective actions to minimize rework and improve installation timelines. Monitor departmental performance metrics, including installation cycle times, project aging, quality scores, customer satisfaction, and safety performance. Resolve escalated installation issues, customer concerns, and field challenges in a timely and professional manner. Support recruiting, onboarding, training, and performance management of in-house service technicians. Ensure proper use, maintenance, and accountability of company vehicles, tools, equipment, and inventory. Collaborate with the COO and senior leadership to develop operational strategies, improve processes, and support company growth initiatives. Maintain accurate documentation, reporting, and communication regarding installation operations, procurement, and departmental performance in CRM. Qualifications 5+ years of residential solar installation or construction operations experience. Previous experience managing installation teams, field personnel, or subcontractors. Strong understanding of residential solar PV systems, battery storage, electrical systems, and permitting processes. Experience coordinating multiple projects in a fast-paced environment. Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and construction safety practices. Experience with procurement, inventory management, and vendor coordination. Proficiency with CRM systems, project management software, and Microsoft Office. Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Physical and Environmental Requirements:
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. as needed while conducting job site visits or assisting field personnel. Frequent travel to installation sites with regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions and active construction environments. Ability to walk on uneven terrain, climb ladders, and access rooftops for inspections and quality reviews. Regular standing, walking, bending, climbing, kneeling, and occasional work at elevated heights. Extended periods of sitting while reviewing schedules, reports, project documentation, plan sets, and operational metrics. Frequent use of computers, mobile devices, lender portals, and communication systems. Must maintain a valid driver's license and clean driving record for regular travel to job sites.
