Position Summary:
The Assistant Athletic Director for Academics is responsible for providing proactive advising and academic support for Henderson State University (HSU) student-athletes. This position will assist in supporting athletes in their endeavor to improve and enhance their skills to achieve academic progress toward graduation. The position monitors compliance with all University, Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations governing the intercollegiate athletics operation. Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation and policy changes. This position is housed in the Chales and Anita Cabe Student-Athlete Success Center, a state-of-the-art center built in 2021.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Meet regularly with academic advisors in the Reddie Student Success Center to work collaboratively in implementing best practices across student population (advising, tutoring, and success workshops). Meet with student-athletes multiple times throughout each semester to ensure they are successfully navigating each phase of their college career. Assist students in the development of an educational plan including choosing a program of study and/or clarifying educational goals and monitoring their progress. Provide students with information about alternatives, limitations, and consequences (both academic and NCAA eligibility) of academic decisions. Partner with various on-campus departments to ensure student success and retention (i.e., faculty, financial aid, student accounts, registrar's office, housing, student health, and counseling). Work with student-athletes throughout the registration process each semester ensuring that the course load is appropriate and balanced between in-season and out-of-season competition. Oversee that all courses are counting towards NCAA Progress Toward Degree (PTD) and graduation requirements. Work with HSU Athletics Compliance Officer to ensure student-athletes are meeting all NCAA academic requirements for eligibility. If a student is not in compliance, provide a plan to get them back in good standing for NCAA eligibility. Conduct grade checks on all student-athletes throughout each semester. Collaborate with student-athletes and coaches on strategies and plans for academic success. Coordinate with the admissions office and coaches regarding rosters and incoming student-athletes in preparation for Heart Start (freshman orientation). Meet with students and parents one-on-one during Heart Start events for registration. Meet with potential student-athletes during various phases of the recruiting process as requested by coaching staff. Aid in various game day responsibilities as directed by the Director of Athletics. Serve as a liaison between athletic staff and academic staff/faculty. Work closely with the NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative on any academic needs and reporting. Submit academic nominations each term for various GAC, NCAA, and other athletic academic awards and honor societies. Provide coaching staff with academic schedules for their student-athletes each semester and work to ensure that academic and athletic schedules conflict as little as possible. Maintain athletic rosters for each of the sports in the Banner System. Oversee the Cabe Student Athletic Center and Cabe student-athlete workers. CabeCenter Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Exemplary communication skills (both written and oral) evidenced by background in preparing comprehensive reports and executive summaries incorporating complex, highly technical information.
  • Advanced organizational and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated computer competency with word processing systems and the ability to utilize student records systems.
General Days/Hours:
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Additional hours as requested and/or needed. Regular and reliable attendance required.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • An earned Bachelor's degree required.
Preferred:
  • An earned Master's degree.
  • 1-2 years athletic academic advising or NCAA Compliance experience.
  • Working knowledge of Banner, NCAA Compliance Assistant, and Navigate preferred.
  • One year of full-time college employment experience working with enrollment services (academic advisement, registration, admissions, or financial aid), or student services related experience (i.
