GENERAL SUMMARY
Responsible for management of the Mosquito Control laboratory including quality control, data management, and safety assurance. Carries out adult and larval mosquito surveys, surveillance for mosquito-borne viruses, and routine experiments including resistance testing and non-target studies, under the general supervision of the Mosquito Control Manager.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Manages the Mosquito Control laboratory to ensure all safety protocols are well-established and posted in accordance with national standards; maintains lab equipment and supplies.2. Performs laboratory tests for the purpose of mosquito detection, surveillance, analysis and identification, including tests to determine prevalence of mosquito-borne viruses.3. Identifies species of both larval and adult mosquitoes.4. Supervises and evaluates other personnel in collection of adult and larval mosquitoes for the purpose of testing, surveillance, and identification.5. Applies scientific method and standardized practices in both laboratory studies and field testing as well as quality assurance of data.6. Plans and carries out field testing of new products applicable to mosquito control in accordance with state and local regulations.7. Responsible for calibration and characterization of insecticides and equipment.8. Designs quality control activities to ensure effectiveness of pesticide applications.9. Assists in permitting and compliance reporting.10. Handles complaints and concerns from the general public and works with them in resolving mosquito-related problems, technical problems, and damage claims.11. Develops community outreach programs to the general public, landowners, and schools. Makes presentations to businesses and community organizations. May assist in preparing media releases, brochures, and updating the program webpage.12. Attends professional conferences and workshops related to new industry technologies and developments. Reviews current publications and technical reports and participates in drafting papers for publication.13. Responsible for maintaining records, manuals, informational materials, and other documents.14. Consistent and punctual attendance is an essential function of this position.15. Performs all other responsibilities as requested by the Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Biological Science or related field with a minimum of one-year experience preferred in both supervision and mosquito control. Must be able to obtain a MDARD Certified Pesticide Applicator's License (category 7F) within 90 days of hire and possess a valid State of Michigan driver's license. Must possess a working knowledge of risk assessment, experimental design, statistical analysis, dichotomous keys, data processing, and GIS. Strong written and verbal communication and computer skills required. With or without reasonable accommodations, must be able to perform assigned duties outdoors while walking through various terrain and weather conditions. Position requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
