Our science department emphasizes inquiry-based learning, lab experiences, and real-world application of scientific concepts, supported by supportive leadership and a collaborative department . Position Overview We are seeking a passionate, student-centered Biology Teacher to join our science department. The ideal candidate will design and deliver engaging lessons aligned to state standards and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), foster strong relationships with students, and collaborate closely with colleagues to support a rigorous and inclusive learning environment. Emerson Public Schools welcomes and actively supports Alternate Route candidates. Candidates who are in the process of obtaining certification or hold Alternate Route eligibility are strongly encouraged to apply. Key Responsibilities Instruction & Curriculum Plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality lessons in Biology for junior and senior high school students (grades 7-12). Implement NGSS-aligned instruction with an emphasis on inquiry, critical thinking, and real-world application. Design and supervise hands-on lab activities , ensuring adherence to all safety procedures and best practices. Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse academic, social, and emotional needs of students, including students with IEPs and 504 plans. Integrate technology (learning management systems, simulations, probeware, online resources) to enhance instruction and assessment. Classroom Environment & Culture Establish and maintain a positive, respectful, and structured classroom environment conducive to learning. Use proactive classroom management strategies that reinforce school norms and expectations. Foster a growth mindset and a culture of curiosity, collaboration, and perseverance in science. Assessment & Data Use Develop and administer formative and summative assessments aligned with course objectives and standards. Analyze assessment data to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly. Provide timely, constructive feedback to students and communicate progress with families as needed. Collaboration & Professionalism Collaborate with science department colleagues on curriculum, common assessments, and interdisciplinary projects. Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, IEP/504 meetings, and school events. Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and other required documentation. Uphold all school, district, and state policies and procedures.Qualifications Required:
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Life Science, Science Education , or a closely related field. Valid New Jersey teaching certification in Biology or Life Science OR eligibility for an approved Alternate Route program (Certificate of Eligibility or evidence of eligibility in progress). Strong content knowledge in life sciences, including cellular biology, genetics, ecology, evolution, and human biology. Experience with, or strong interest in, inquiry-based and student-centered instruction .Preferred:
Master's degree in education or a relevant science field. Prior successful teaching experience at the middle or high school level (student teaching, clinical experience, or Alternate Route internship experience welcomed). Familiarity with NGSS and standards-based grading practices. Experience supporting diverse learners , including English learners and students with special needs. Ability to advise or support extracurricular activities (science club, STEM competitions, environmental club, etc.). Skills & Competencies Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills. Excellent communication skills with students, families, and colleagues. Ability to design engaging labs and projects using available resources. Commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive teaching .
