Job Description

Rogers Lake Boat Ramp Monitor Job Description As part of the Rogers Lake Authority's (RLA) effort to control the spread of non-native aquatic invasive species (AIS) in our lakes and ponds, the RLA is looking to hire Ramp Monitors who are responsible for educating the public on AIS and performing voluntary inspections on boats, trailers and gear. Ramp monitors will look for any hitchhiking plants or animals and will distribute educational materials to boaters. In addition, boat ramp monitors will conduct a brief survey of boaters that use the facilities. This is a part time role averaging 10 hours per week between Memorial Day and Labor Day and paid $25 per hour. Primary assignments will be Saturdays and Sundays from 7 am to 12 pm with the possibility of some shifts during the week. All work will be conducted at the State Boat launch on Grassy Hill Road, Old Lyme, CT and under the supervision of the RLA. Monitors are employees of the Town of Old Lyme and have a close working relationship with members of the RLA and the RLA Safety Patrol.
Responsibilities:
Prior to starting work, the Ramp Monitors must participate in training conducted by the State of Connecticut and the RLA on the identification of invasive aquatic species and the procedure for conducting boat inspections and surveys. The State training information is available at: https://portal.ct.gov/deep/invasive-species/invasive-investigator-program Conduct voluntary boat inspections for aquatic plants or animals attached to the boats/trailers/gear for boats entering and/or leaving Rogers Lake. Boat inspections will be conducted only on the boats of individuals that have agreed to participate and will be limited to the external portions of the boat and trailer. Boat ramp monitors may ask boaters if they are willing to empty bait buckets, live-wells, and cooling water on dry land away from shore. Distribute educational materials including but not limited to materials on aquatic invasive species, boater safety and boat decontamination. Conduct a brief survey of boat owners regarding where their boat has been previously, whether it has been properly decontaminated and whether the inspection showed the boat was "clean". Record this information in the survey database. Record the registration number of any boats that enter or leave Twin Lakes that do not agree to participate in the program or have evidence of AIS. Record this information via the survey form in the database. A self-starter who is reliable and demonstrates a strong work ethic. Has knowledge of Rogers Lake, watercraft and the challenges posed by invasive species. Possess strong communication skills and an ability to engage the public in a professional and courteous manner. Be creative and possess solid problem-solving skills so that the program may be continually improved. Have completed two years of college or two years of work experience. Be a good representative of the RLA, working closely with the boating public and so that the experience of the public is positive and consistent with the educational mandate of the RLA Boat Monitors.
