Job Description

YSC is a specialty restoration contractor based in Harvard, MA. We restore industrial smokestacks, masonry chimneys, church steeples, bell towers, and other tall structures across New England. We're seeking a motivated mason/laborer to join our crew and learn the steeplejack trade. Duties Repoint, rebuild, and restore brick and stone chimneys, smokestacks, steeples, and towers — typically working between 30 and 200+ feet in the air Rig and de-rig bracket scaffolds, scaling ladders, rope hoists, and other steeplejack access systems under the direction of the foreman Mix mortar to historic specs, replace spalled brick, form and pour reinforced concrete chimney caps, and install vented covers and lightning protection systems Operate hand tools (trowel, hammer, chisel, jointer) and power tools (grinder, saw, drill, mortar mixer) safely at elevation Set up and break down ground staging, organize materials, and load/unload the rack truck Follow all fall-protection, OSHA, and YSC safety procedures — 100% tie-off at height, no exceptions Document before/after conditions with photographs as required by the job Maintain a clean, organized site and protect adjacent roof surfaces and building elements at all times Requirements Comfortable working at significant heights — this is the most important qualification. If you can't or don't want to work 100+ feet up, this is not the right role. Construction or masonry experience preferred (bricklaying, repointing, concrete) Skilled with hand tools (trowel, hammer, chisel, jointer) and comfortable with power tools (grinder, saw, drill); experience with mortar mixers a plus Strong physical stamina — climbing ladders multiple times a day, hauling materials by rope, performing skilled work at height for full shifts in variable weather Reliable, on time, and a team player — small crews mean every person matters OSHA-10 required (we'll sign you up if you don't have it). OSHA-30, fall-protection certifications, and lift training are a plus. Valid driver's license; clean driving record preferred Authorized to work in the United States What we offer Steady year-round work on a variety of historic and industrial restoration projects across MA and New England Training in steeplejack and high-elevation masonry techniques you can't learn on a typical jobsite Competitive pay based on experience, plus per diem on overnight jobs OSHA-10 certification covered by the company A small, tight crew where your craftsmanship and reliability are noticed Yankee Steeplejack Company has been working on the high places of New England's churches, mills, and industrial buildings for decades. If you want to learn a trade that almost no one practices anymore — and put your hands on landmark structures — we'd like to hear from you.
