Behavioral Health Billing Specialist SUD/MH Core Billing Services Tewksbury, MA Job Details Full-time From $55,000 a year 13 hours ago Benefits Health insurance Dental insurance Paid time off Vision insurance Qualifications HCPCS Level II Attention to detail Medical procedure terminology Documentation review Time management Full Job Description Job Overview We are seeking an experienced SUD/MH Medical Biller to join our RCM team. This role is responsible for the accurate and timely submission of behavioral health claims, including original and corrected claims, while ensuring billing is consistent with payer requirements, authorizations, documentation, and established billing guidelines. The ideal candidate has direct experience billing for SUD and MH services, preferably including PHP and IOP. This individual must be comfortable coordinating with internal and external departments to resolve issues that may prevent claims from being submitted accurately and within timely filing requirements. Key Responsibilities Prepare and submit accurate insurance claims for SUD and MH services in accordance with payer-specific billing requirements. Ensure claims are submitted timely and within applicable payer timely filing limits. Review claims prior to submission for accuracy, completeness, and appropriate billing information. Submit corrected claims when billing errors, coding changes, authorization updates, or other corrections are identified. Review census, demographic, insurance, authorization, and clinical information necessary to support accurate claim submission. Identify missing or conflicting information that may prevent a claim from being billed and coordinate with the appropriate department for resolution. Work closely with internal and external departments, including Utilization Review, Verification of Benefits, facility operations, and clinical teams, to resolve billing-related discrepancies. Ensure claims are billed using the appropriate diagnosis codes, procedure codes, revenue codes, modifiers, units, and other required claim information. Monitor unbilled claims and proactively address barriers to timely submission. Maintain accurate documentation of billing activity and claim corrections. Follow payer-specific billing guidelines and remain current on changes that may impact claim submission. Assist with billing audits and claim quality reviews as needed. Escalate recurring billing issues, documentation gaps, or workflow concerns to leadership. This position does not perform payment posting, insurance collections, accounts receivable follow-up, or payment-related functions. Experience & Qualifications Prior SUD and/or Mental Health medical billing experience required. Experience billing PHP and IOP services strongly preferred. Hands-on experience preparing and submitting institutional and/or professional behavioral health claims. Experience submitting corrected claims and resolving claim submission errors. Strong understanding of behavioral health billing, including
CPT/HCPCS
codes, revenue codes, ICD-10 diagnosis codes, modifiers, units, and payer-specific billing requirements. Knowledge of insurance authorization requirements and how authorizations impact claim submission. Understanding of payer timely filing requirements and the importance of maintaining timely claim submission. Experience with KIPU and CollaborateMD strongly preferred. Ability to coordinate effectively with multiple departments and communicate clearly when additional information or corrections are required. Strong attention to detail and ability to identify discrepancies before claims are submitted. Excellent organizational and time-management skills. Ability to manage a high-volume billing workload while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines. Ability to work independently while appropriately escalating issues that require additional support.
