Insurance Billing Specialist

Job Description

The Specialists is a growing, therapist-owned and women-owned speech and occupational therapy practice in Wayne, Michigan. We are looking for an experienced Medical Billing Specialist to take ownership of insurance billing, benefits, authorizations, and claims follow-up for our pediatric speech and occupational therapy services. We are a small, independent practice, and we are looking for someone who wants to be an important part of our team - not just another employee in a large healthcare system. We prioritize work-life balance, mutual respect, flexibility, and creating a genuinely great place to work. What You'll Do This role will be responsible for managing the insurance and billing process from start to finish, including: Verify insurance eligibility and speech/occupational therapy benefits Determine copays, coinsurance, deductibles, visit limits, and authorization requirements Obtain prior authorizations for evaluations and ongoing treatment Track authorizations, approved visits/units, expiration dates, and remaining visits Track insurance benefit and visit limitations to ensure patients do not exceed coverage Submit clean and accurate insurance claims Review and correct claim rejections Investigate denied or underpaid claims and submit corrected claims, reconsiderations, and appeals as appropriate Follow up with insurance companies on outstanding claims and authorizations Bill and collect appropriate patient responsibility, including copays, coinsurance, and deductibles Maintain organized and accurate billing, authorization, and benefit records Communicate with therapists and practice owners regarding billing or authorization concerns Assist with credentialing, recredentialing, CAQH, and payer enrollment as needed Identify recurring payer issues and help us improve our billing processes as the practice grows Who We're Looking For Above all, we need someone who is extremely detail-oriented, organized, persistent, and good at following a task through to completion. We don't want someone who simply submits a claim or authorization request and considers the task finished. If something is pending, rejected, denied, or incorrect, we need someone who will track it, follow up, troubleshoot the issue, and continue working it until it is resolved.
The ideal candidate:
Is extremely detail oreinted Has previous medical billing and insurance experience Has experience with speech therapy, occupational therapy, pediatric therapy, rehabilitation, or outpatient therapy billing Is knowledgeable about prior authorizations, benefit verification, claim submission, denials, rejections, corrected claims, and appeals Has experience working with commercial insurance and Medicaid/Medicaid managed-care plans Is familiar with Michigan insurance billing requirements Understands CPT codes, modifiers, authorization requirements, and visit limitations Is comfortable calling insurance companies and advocating for appropriate reimbursement Can manage multiple deadlines, authorizations, patients, and outstanding claims without letting things fall through the cracks Is comfortable working independently and taking ownership of their responsibilities Communicates professionally and clearly with families, therapists, insurance representatives, and practice leadership Is comfortable learning payer-specific requirements and researching unfamiliar billing issues Experience with SimplePractice is a plus. Credentialing and payer enrollment experience is also a plus. Why Work With The Specialists? The Specialists is run by practicing therapists, and we have intentionally built our company around the idea that employees should be treated like people. We're growing, but we don't want to lose what makes being a small practice special.
We value:
Work-life balance Flexibility Respect and open communication Independence and trust A supportive, collaborative work environment Employees who take ownership of their work without being micromanaged Building systems that make everyone's job easier This is a great opportunity for someone who knows medical billing, enjoys solving problems, and would be excited to help shape the billing systems of a growing independent speech and occupational therapy practice.
