JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education High school diploma or GED preferred. Experience At least three months experience in a call center, hospital switchboard, or customer service role preferred. Medical terminology preferred. Proficiency with computers and technology. Physical This is a safety sensitive position. Please see the St. Bernards Substance Abuse Policy for further information. Normal hospital environment. Close eye work. Hearing within normal range. Oral communication. Operates switchboard console, computer, adding machine, and microphone. Continuous sitting. Occasional walking and bending. Lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling up to 10 pounds. Ability to remain seated for prolonged periods while operating computer systems, switchboard equipment, and telecommunication devices. Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, data entry, and handling communication equipment.
JOB SUMMARY
The Telecommunications Operator serves as the primary point of contact for incoming and outgoing communications within the hospital and affiliated facilities. This position supports daily operations by managing high-volume telephone traffic, coordinating on-call personnel notifications, and providing timely and accurate information to internal and external customers. Operators are responsible for switchboard and call center functions, including answering and routing calls, overhead paging, emergency notifications, and escalation processes according to hospital standards. The Operator must maintain strong computer and technology skills to navigate multiple software platforms, including electronic medical records, communication tools, and directory systems.
