Snowmaking Supervisor Magic Mountain Ski Area | Seasonal Position Department Mountain Operations Reports To Snowmaking Manager, Mountain Operations Director, or General Manager Employment Type Seasonal, full-time Supervises Snowmaking crew members and shift leads, as assigned Position Summary The Snowmaking Supervisor leads the safe, efficient, and effective operation of Magic Mountain's snowmaking system throughout the winter season. This hands-on position directs daily snowmaking activities, supervises and trains seasonal staff, coordinates closely with Mountain Operations, Lift Operations, Ski Patrol, Grooming, and Maintenance, and supports the production of a consistent, high-quality snow surface. The successful candidate combines strong field leadership, sound operational judgment, mechanical aptitude, and a commitment to safety, teamwork, and Magic Mountain's guest experience. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plan and direct daily snowmaking operations based on weather conditions, terrain priorities, water and air availability, staffing, and overall mountain operating goals.
  • Assign crews, establish shift priorities, conduct pre-shift briefings, and maintain clear communication throughout each operating period.
  • Start, operate, monitor, adjust, and shut down snowmaking equipment and related infrastructure in accordance with established procedures.
  • Monitor weather forecasts and real-time conditions, including temperature, humidity, wind, and wet-bulb temperature, to make timely production decisions.
  • Coordinate snowmaking activities with Grooming, Ski Patrol, Lift Operations, Maintenance, and other departments to support safe trail access and efficient mountain operations.
  • Inspect snow guns, hoses, hydrants, valves, pumps, compressors, electrical connections, and related equipment; identify concerns and coordinate repairs or maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate shift logs, production records, equipment status reports, incident documentation, and maintenance requests.
  • Respond promptly to changing conditions, equipment failures, water or air interruptions, and other operational issues.
  • Support preseason system setup and postseason shutdown, draining, inventory, inspection, and storage.
  • Perform other mountain operations duties as assigned, consistent with training and operational needs. Leadership and Staff Development
  • Provide visible, hands-on leadership and set clear expectations for safety, productivity, attendance, communication, and equipment care.
  • Train employees in snowmaking procedures, equipment operation, hazard recognition, emergency response, radio use, and department policies.
  • Confirm that employees understand assignments and are appropriately trained before performing work independently.
  • Monitor work performance, coach employees in the field, recognize strong performance, and address concerns promptly and professionally.
  • Assist with seasonal hiring, onboarding, scheduling, timekeeping, and performance documentation.
  • Promote a respectful, accountable, and team-oriented work environment. Safety and Compliance
  • Make safety the first priority in all snowmaking decisions and stop work when conditions or practices present an unacceptable risk.
  • Enforce required personal protective equipment, safe hose handling, lockout/tagout procedures, electrical safety, vehicle and snowmobile rules, and safe travel on steep, icy, or low-visibility terrain.
  • Conduct routine work-area and equipment inspections and correct or report hazards promptly.
  • Ensure proper communication and coordination when snowmaking occurs near open terrain, lifts, roads, buildings, or the public.
  • Participate in incident response, emergency procedures, and required safety meetings and training.
  • Follow all applicable company policies, manufacturer instructions, and federal, state, and local safety requirements. Required Qualifications
  • Previous snowmaking experience, including practical knowledge of snow guns, hydrants, hoses, valves, pumps, compressors, and related systems.
  • Prior lead or supervisory experience in snowmaking, mountain operations, utilities, construction, outdoor operations, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead crews, organize work, make decisions under changing conditions, and communicate clearly by radio and in person.
  • Mechanical aptitude and the ability to identify basic equipment or system problems.
  • Ability to read weather information, understand wet-bulb temperature, and adjust operations accordingly.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision.
  • Reliable attendance and availability throughout the snowmaking season. Preferred Qualifications
  • Three or more seasons of snowmaking experience.
  • Experience supervising overnight or around-the-clock operations.
  • Experience operating snowmobiles, utility vehicles, and other mountain equipment.
  • First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain certification.
Schedule and Seasonal Expectations This is a seasonal, weather-dependent position requiring flexibility during peak snowmaking periods. The supervisor must be available for nights, weekends, holidays, extended shifts, early mornings, and schedule changes with limited notice. Hours may vary according to weather, operational priorities, and business needs. Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Work outdoors for extended periods in extreme cold, wind, snow, freezing spray, darkness, and rapidly changing weather.
  • Walk and work on steep, uneven, icy, and snow-covered terrain while carrying tools or equipment.
  • Frequently stand, bend, crouch, climb, reach, push, pull, and perform repetitive physical tasks.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and heavier items with assistance or appropriate equipment.
  • Safely operate snowmobiles, utility vehicles, and snowmaking equipment after required training and authorization.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment and maintain situational awareness around pressurized systems, moving equipment, vehicles, and active terrain. Environmental and Sustainability Compliance
  • Operate the snowmaking system to use water and energy responsibly while meeting approved production and terrain-opening priorities.
  • Monitor equipment efficiency and promptly report leaks, damaged hoses, malfunctioning valves, excessive water loss, or other conditions that may waste resources or affect surrounding land and waterways.
  • Follow established procedures for fuel, oil, lubricants, chemicals, and other regulated materials, including proper labeling, storage, handling, spill prevention, and disposal.
  • Immediately report and assist with the containment and documentation of spills, releases, or environmental concerns in accordance with Magic Mountain procedures.
  • Protect streams, drainage areas, wetlands, vegetation, soils, and wildlife habitat by keeping equipment and materials within approved work areas and following erosion-control and water-quality requirements.
  • Minimize idling and unnecessary equipment operation, and use efficient equipment deployment, shutdown, and maintenance practices to reduce fuel and electricity consumption.
  • Separate, recycle, reuse, or properly dispose of hoses, fittings, packaging, fluids, and other operational materials in accordance with company practices and applicable requirements.
  • Train snowmaking staff on environmental expectations and ensure compliance with applicable permits, company sustainability practices, and federal, state, and local environmental requirements.
