Full Job Description Location:
East Bay, CA (Yard Located in Richmond)
Compensation:
$38-42/hour depending on experience and demonstrated ability. Performance Evaluations yearly and at the 6-month mark. About Us We design and build exceptional outdoor spaces that combine craftsmanship, ecology, and timeless design. Our work includes California native landscapes, edible gardens, premium hardscape, water-wise irrigation, ecological restoration, and family-centered outdoor living spaces. We're not a production landscaping company. We focus on quality over quantity and build landscapes that will thrive for decades. We're a small, growing team where every person has a meaningful impact on the company's success. We're looking for someone who wants more than just another construction job—someone who wants to build beautiful work, grow as a leader, and help shape the future of our company. Our Approach We're not interested in doing things the way they've "always been done." Many of our team members have worked for other landscape companies, and we respect the experience they bring. But when you join our team, we expect you to be open to learning our standards and methods. Our work is guided by craftsmanship, ecological responsibility, and long-term thinking—not shortcuts or outdated industry habits. We prioritize healthy soils, thoughtful plant selection, durable construction, water-wise design, and building landscapes that improve over time. We don't rely on unnecessary landscape fabric, plastic edging, or other practices simply because "that's how it's always been done." Experience is valuable, but humility is essential. If your first instinct is to say, "At my last company, we always did it this way," this probably isn't the right fit. If your first instinct is, "Help me understand why you do it this way," you'll likely thrive here. Position Summary We're looking for an experienced landscape construction professional who can take ownership of major portions of our projects while working alongside the crew every day. This is a working leadership position . You'll help keep projects moving, solve problems, maintain quality, train less experienced team members, and step into leadership whenever our Foreman is away. Most importantly, you'll spend your day building landscapes alongside the crew—not supervising from the sidelines. As we grow, this role is designed to evolve into greater field leadership responsibility. What You'll Do Construction Install pavers, retaining walls, irrigation, drainage, planting, fencing, edging, lighting, and other landscape features. Read and interpret landscape plans. Verify measurements and layout. Assist with grading and elevations. Operate equipment and power tools safely. Maintain exceptional quality standards. Leadership Keep the crew productive and organized. Lead the crew when the Foreman is off-site. Train and mentor newer employees. Demonstrate proper installation techniques. Communicate issues before they become problems. Help create a positive, accountable team culture. Working Leadership Our leaders work with the crew, not above it.
You should expect to:
Dig trenches. Move materials. Haul rock, soil, and mulch. Install irrigation. Set pavers. Build retaining walls. Plant trees and shrubs. Load trailers. Clean jobsites. Jump in wherever the project needs you. Some days you'll solve technical problems. Other days you'll spend eight hours doing physically demanding work alongside everyone else. The right person enjoys both. Qualifications Required 5+ years of residential landscape construction experience. Ability to read landscape plans and independently translate them into high-quality field installation. Strong irrigation and drainage experience. Experience with grading and layout. Experience installing pavers and hardscape. Experience planting trees and shrubs. Ability to read landscape plans. Valid California driver's license. Reliable transportation. Ability to lift 75+ pounds repeatedly. Comfortable using construction equipment and power tools. Comfortable driving a full-size pickup. Experience towing and backing trailers is preferred, or willingness to become proficient within the first 90 days. Preferred Crew leadership experience. Retaining wall construction. Equipment operation. Concrete work. Carpentry or metalwork. Bilingual English/Spanish. High-end residential landscape experience. We're Looking For Someone Who Takes ownership. Shows up consistently. Solves problems independently. Thinks ahead. Communicates professionally. Takes pride in craftsmanship. Enjoys mentoring others. Works hard physically. Wants to grow with a company. Is humble and open to learning. This Job Is Not For Someone Who Waits to be told what to do. Cuts corners. Creates drama. Thinks leadership means avoiding physical work. Doesn't care about quality. Believes their previous employer's way is automatically the best way. Isn't willing to learn a different approach. Growth Opportunity We're intentionally hiring ahead of our growth. Today you'll work as part of one construction crew alongside our Foreman. As the company grows, this position is intended to develop into a larger field leadership role. We believe in promoting from within whenever possible. Why Join Us? Build beautiful, meaningful landscapes. Learn ecological construction methods that set you apart. Work on unique, high-end residential projects. Join a respectful, supportive team. Grow into increasing leadership opportunities. Help shape the future of a fast-growing company. If you're looking for a place where your work matters, you're excited to learn, and you want to build landscapes with integrity and purpose, we'd love to meet you.
