This is a part time position working approximately 6 hours per week for 10 months out of the year February through November annually. The position can be an hourly employee or a contractor. An independent contractor must carry their own insurance. The Brookland Park Community Garden is located on the school grounds of Richmond Community High School (RCHS). It is a joint venture between the high school and the nonprofit Friends of Richmond Community High School. The community garden has a fruit tree orchard of about 20 trees, approximately 16 neighbor growing plots, student growing plots and fields, and a 60' x 20' greenhouse. This position is being hired by Friends of RCHS, 501c3 and reports directly to the Executive Director with collaboration with teachers and school administration.

Job Responsibilities Horticulture & Crop Planning:

Designing seasonal planting layouts, tracking harvest yields, and applying organic or regenerative soil practices.

Student Community Service Program:

Work with high school student volunteer on a weekly basis. This entails planning and evaluating the safety of student work while in the garden. This individual will service as the direct student supervisor while volunteers are in the garden and work to educate them on urban sustainable garden practices.

Team & Volunteer Leadership:

Recruiting, training, and scheduling gardening volunteers. Assist the Director with organizing volunteer groups for seasonal projects.

Operations & Finances:

Forecast and manage the expenditure of funds needed for garden operations. Collaborate with the Executive Director on purchasing tools and supplies and ensue all garden equipment is serviced and functional. Meet with contractors for larger projects at the garden.

Facility Maintenance:

Maintaining pathways, growing beds, a greenhouse, built structures, fields, and landscape features.

Equipment and Supplies:

Help to identify needed equipment and supplies and provide input to the Executive Director for grants or fundraising.

Communication:

Provide excellent communication with: Neighbor gardeners Teachers / administration of RCHS Student volunteers at RCHS Executive Director Friends of RCHS, 501c3 Board and community groups and businesses Additional responsibilities:

• Embody and promote the Garden's mission, vision, and strategic plan during Garden activities with staff, volunteers, and visitors, and in external communications.
• Perform horticultural tasks which include but may not be limited to weed control, planting, soil regeneration, compost management, pruning, watering / irrigation, weed trimming, organic pest control, and organic methods for fertilization if needed.
• Oversee student charitable food donations to local food banks and similar entities.

Essential Requirements Education & Experience:

Education or experience working in horticulture or community gardening. Have or be willing to get the

Virginia Cooperative Extension Urban Agriculture Certificate Physical Stamina:

Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, routinely lift 20-50 lbs, and handle extensive standing, bending, and stooping.

Key Skills:

Strong leadership, excellent time management, plant pathology knowledge, and proficiency with motorized landscaping equipment.

Criminal Background Check:

Must clear a criminal background check showing no convictions or pending judgments that can be considered barrier crimes in working with children. Hourly Pay Pay is based on experience ranging from $19 to $23 an hour

$19.00 - $23.00 per hour
